:DI've been thinking about warmer weather plans for 2013. I'm gearing up for some light touring and want to explore some new places. I've put together a tentative route here:

I'd love to hear feedback from anyone familiar with the areas. Once I arrive in Eugene I expect to start following the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway, not the rough approximation thrown up on bikely.

Here are my big questions:
-What are the virtues of taking hwy 26 down to Madras instead of the NF-46 to Detroit? I'm okay with more traffic, climbing and less shoulder if the scenery is worth seeing.
-Are Sahalie and Koosah Falls so awesome I should detour to see them? If I do I will almost definitely cut Eugene out of the loop, so for that matter, what's worth seeing in Eugene?
-I was considering riding mostly east of the Willamette Bikeway and going to Abiqua Falls on the return ride, but only if I can add a few more natural wonders to that possible route. Ideas?

SC, IMO:
- I love the Clackamas River FS 46 route, haven't ridden 26 east of Mt Hood but it does not appeal to me - too much traffic. Also - from Detroit heading S/Sw to Green Peter Res./ Sweet Home there's a (mostly?) paved route on forest service roads- check out a Willamette National Forest map if this intrigues you.(it does me)
- some great east side of the valley routes, as good as the WVSB route. Brownsville is a charming town, Scio's got all sorts of covered bridges - check out the Linn Co./Albany bike map :

Do. Not. Ride HWY 26. From Mount Hood into Warm Springs - heavy crosswinds very little shoulder, high truck traffic, higher speeds, and nothing to look at. That section of road is a death trap for cyclists. Avoid it like the plague.

Stick with the Estacada to Detroit via HWY 224 and FR 46. Lots more to see.

I'm doing that ride this coming June on my way to Nevada.

I'd also suggest 7 Mile Lane through Brownsville (An Awesome town in it's own right) to Diamond Hill Drive, versus riding on 99E. The East side of Interstate 5 has lots to look at. Find some covered bridges to go under...

I know there are some routes from Portland through to Eugene posted on bikely already keeping you mostly on the east side of I-5. Worth taking a look at.
