I masked the reflective strip and the velcro with regular masking tape.

I'm pleased with the results.

Update in a month or two or less, how the finish holds up to flexing and abrasion. Also, getting paint on the zipper teeth might be something to be cautious about doing; might not be a problem, or on the other hand, it might be a problem.

I didn't protect the zippers, and they are a little harder to operate, but then I seldom use them (I don't always use the cable when I lock up). I'm certain that in time they will get easier to use again.

As to the durability of the finish, I'll keep an eye on things, but I've still got the can of paint, and it wasn't anywhere near being used up with this application.

Seeing it in the photos, I'm tempted to wash it, let it dry, and try again (this time masking the zippers too).

FYI: My bike spends a lot of time outdoors while I'm at school, and I'd guess the bag's about 10 years old now.
