I just a really cheesy 80's bike movie called Quicksilver. It featured lots of bad 80's music and trick seens ala break dancing movies. I really wished I could have got into it, but there was no way. But now I want to see some bike movies that don't suck. Any suggestions?

Well, given that most of the bike movies that made it into theaters were "cheesy 80's" movies, you may be out of luck.

American Flyers (1985) is pretty good most of the time, but has some laughably cheesy dialogue and typical 80's music. But what do you expect from a movie with (a very young) Kevin Costner in it?

Breaking Away (1979) is a REALLY cheesy movie with a very young Dennis Quaid.

A good list of bicycle movies can be found at: http://www.massbike.org/info/movies.htm

Oh, and let's not forget "Pee Wee's Big Adventure" - where Pee Wee Herman spends the entire movie looking for his stolen bike.

Well, ok - maybe we *should* forget it. Guilty pleasures should not be shared.

(side note: In my limited experience, Texans are REALLY like that. Watch the movie and you'll see what I mean)

Actually, "Breaking Away" is a much better movie than you give it credit for. It has interesting characters, great dialogue, and several entertaining subplots going on in addition to the main storyline. The Academy of Motion Pictures thought it was pretty good; they gave it an Oscar for "Best Screenplay" in 1979.

Check out Joergen Leth's documentaries - "A Sunday in Hell," and "Le Tete de Course" if you want to see some great historic cycle racing. Eddy in his prime!

Also, "The Triplets of Beleville" is THE best-cycling movie ever!!!

"Breaking Away" is a must-see bicycling movie. Also look for "The Bicycle Thief"-- a classic, although it's not really about bicycling per se. And I haven't seen "Beijing Bicycle" (which was influenced by The Bicycle thief), but I've seen previews, and based on the previews and comments from people who have seen it, it's also a must-see.

Regarding American Flyers: all the Russian bike racers had thick black beards...

But Rae Dawn Chong did learn to swap a rear wheel in 8 seconds flat.

Breaking Away rocks- it's one of my favorite movies of all time. Right up there with Repo Man. You have to have lived through the '80's to appreciate those years.
