Today's architecture ride set off with an amazing start. About 50 people (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60961560@N00/171029632/) joined in at Women's Park behind the Portland Building. Carl was our professor for the afternoon (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60961560@N00/171029629/) while we discussed Portland's Architecture and Urban Planning. We started with the history of the Portland Building and Post-Modernism (http://architecture.about.com/library/blgloss-postmodernism.htm). We then compared it to modernism (http://architecture.about.com/library/blgloss-bauhaus.htm) and brutalism. We looked at several of the wonderful fountains (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60961560@N00/171052347/) designed around the 'tower in a park' philosophy. Carl (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60961560@N00/171037564/) shared with us the philosophy behind the urban park development. We then enjoyed a critical mass across the Hawthorne Bridge and up to Ladd's Addition (http://www.flickr.com/photos/60961560@N00/171037567/) where we talked about the urban design of that neighborhood and nearby buildings. We headed back to Hawthorne where my photo-documentary was put to an end by 'da man.'
