How about a kind of treasure hunt... Post a photo of something worth looking at in the Metro Area, and people try to figure out where it is... Brownie points for posting a pic (with your bike) that shows that you found it...

Where Am I?

Just for fun...

Please, if you post a image, and nobody can figure it out within a week, give us a hint, or just let us know where it is.

I'm going to have to go with the tower just down the road before you get to the south end of Fairmont Loop. KGON broadcasts from that one if I remember correctly. Here's a photo from a more familiar angle:
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2185/2410073974_c49d077b3a.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jr98664/2410073974/in/set-72157604514274377/)

Now it's time for mine. So many possibilities.
Hint: This one might be hard if you never make it out of the City of Portland proper. Note the grooves for bicycle tires. Very handy, indeed!

I think looking at the flickr page would make it too easy, but it is nonetheless required per their TOS.

The tower is on SW Carl Place.

The stairs with the tire gutters (which I never use) are on the MUP by the Fish Hatchery in the Columbia River Gorge between Cascade Locks and, um, where the trail abruptly ends at that creek, and you've got to hop onto the I-84 shoulder heading westbound and get off at the first exit and get onto the scenic highway.

Yep, you got it alright. Riding on I-84 after such a nice quiet path is certainly an interesting way to enjoy the gorge, but still fun in some crazy kind of way.

This one seems like a giveaway at first, but a quick google and google maps didn't reveal the location.... (EDIT: it is within 25 miles of Portland, OR)

I think you may have forgotten that there aren't just Oregon residents here. ;) I quickly remembered riding past the sign, it just took me a bit longer to remember exactly where. It's on NE 10th Ave in Clark County just to the south of 219th St, where the new exit off of I-5 was recently opened.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3140/3067915242_b3be069c4a.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/jr98664/3067915242/in/set-72157610396648266/)
That's a view of the exit from the next overpass to the north. I still have yet to take that exit on my bike, although I would imagine it might be rather fun in one way or another.

Keeping with the theme of the previous picture, can you tell me where I found this view?

Do the rules of this game only allow the correct guesser of the last photo to post a new one, or is it more of a free-for-all where anyone can post photos to guess on?

I'm pretty new to Portland so I'm unlikely to get any of these, but I do take my camera with me most of the time when riding and like to shoot interesting things.

I intended it to be a free-for-all (like I could really enforce a rule like correct guesser only ;) ). This is just a way of spicing things up here, and prompting people to post pics of places that people may not have been to yet, and might want to go and see.

I'm not lynne, but The dragon is a little to the east of the "A" in this map, IIRC (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=31224+E.+Historic+Columbia+River+Highway+Troutda le,+OR&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=49.089956,63.896484&ie=UTF8&t=h&z=16)

Ooooh, a street view crew has driven by it. (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=31224+E.+Historic+Columbia+River+Highway+Troutda le,+OR&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=49.089956,63.896484&ie=UTF8&t=h&ll=45.516527,-122.341454&spn=0.01069,0.0156&z=16&iwloc=addr&layer=c&cbll=45.51648,-122.341558&panoid=IOf5ejc2YXOxe-ZVKJNi5Q&cbp=12,119.35196446332358,,0,9.242829023140636) Awesome riding out that way. I used to ride out there with a low gear of 42x24 when I was a youngin. I have trouble with milder hills in my 42x28 these days, though.

While you're out that way, might as well see if the Oneonta Tunnel, (http://blog.oregonlive.com/multimedia/2009/02/after_being_shut_for_60_years.html) a few miles to the east, is open yet.

That's it (dragon location). A great ride - you've got to ride through lots of eastside to get there, although you could go out Marine Drive, then cross under I-84 at Troutdale, then just follow the Columbia River Highway. And don't stop at the dragon - go until you have to get on I-84, and then come back. Or at least as far as Oneonta Gorge, as Lester suggested.

Ice cream at Multnomah Falls is required on hot days. Popsicles at the convenience store in Troutdale, too.

Neither side of the climb up to Crown Point is difficult.

I'll take this one, seeing as it's not in Vancouver. It's obviously a ferry, but doesn't look like any of the ones I've been on in Oregon. I'm going to have to guess that this is the Wahkiakum County Ferry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wahkiakum_County_Ferry) between Cathlamet, WA and Westport, OR.

My employer hosts a company campout in Skamokoa every year, and I've been pedaling to it the last couple of years. The ferry ride is the perfect opportunity to mentally organize the long ride it took to get there, followed by the quiet ride across Puget Island, followed by the serene ride through the Julia Butler Hansen Refuge (http://www.fws.gov/Refuges/profiles/index.cfm?id=13554).

Last year I made a north Oregon coast tour of it, and that's why there's a big box full of goodies from the Astoria Home Bakery strapped to the back of the bike in this picture.

Actually, Lynne, I was just about to find it, when I got distracted by looking through over 90 pages of your photos by bike. Quite a few interesting shots.

As for the barn: Is this close enough (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=45.5765,-123.1422&sll=45.576501,-123.142362&sspn=0.010724,0.017424&g=45.5765,-123.1423&ie=UTF8&ll=45.5765,-123.142214&spn=0.00134,0.002178&t=k&z=19&iwloc=A)?

that's it. Did you see it in person, or rummaging through my photos? If by rummaging, you need to now ride out to Washington County and see the barn in person. Also the plum orchards, berry bushes, livestock, amazing display of rusty farm implements by said barn, and then pedal on in to Forest Grove and have a big sticky bun at Maggie's Buns.

Your barn looks cool; but I can't identify it. Maybe I'll ride by it some day.

I'm restricting myself from guessing on any Vancouver ones, as it's just not fair. That's about 19th and Main. I love that mural, a great snapshot of HWY 99 back in the day. The Tip Top Tavern, which can be seen in the mural, is still in operation, and they have Stone IPA on tap, yummm.

If you're interested in HWY 99 history, further up HWY 99, the Starbucks on 78th Street has both sides of an olde leaflet advertising the businesses along HWY 99. I'm guessing it dates from the 50s or 60s. They called the stretch of road in the ad "The Strip", in attempt to give Hazel Dell the kind of excitement you'd find in Hollywood or Vegas, hehehe.

Getting under the railroad bridge after the Ross Complex can be tricky, however. You may want to take a left on Hazel Dell Ave, then right on 78th street to get back around to HWY 99.

Not sure if anyone guessed this. That's a cool shot of the condo's at Williams and Wygant (? just a block or 2 south of Alberta). I like the blur effect because it's kinda like when you're hustling by trying to make the light at Alberta.

Funny story, they used to have barkdust between the street and sidewalk. My wife & I were riding past one day last summer and it was so hot outside that the barkdust was smoldering and catching on fire. They've since replaced it with gravel (edit: that's the gravel in the lower right of the photo :)).

Sorry, I was just looking for the location, didn't mean to imply something else about the stairs.

I will say it is unusual for most staircases to have bike-friendly ramps....so I guess that's a clue of where it might be located.

The stairs are on the old Columbia Gorge Scenic Highway MUP that runs between Cascade Locks and 1 mile short of the I-84 Warrendale exit (heading westbound).

Eastbound you've got a couple of miles on the I-84 shoulder, with 2 narrow shoulders on bridges.

No Takers... So, I'll give this one up... It's Governer Withycombe's Giant Sequoia

http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1425/5107544069_c32aa5a64e.jpg (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ufobike/5107544069/in/photostream/)

Giant sequoia close to the SW Grabel Road in Hillsboro (http://www.monumentaltrees.com/en/usa/oregon/washingtoncounty/898_swgrabelroad/)

There is one giant sequoia close to the SW Grabel Road in Hillsboro (Washington County).

James Withycombe served as Oregon's governor
from 1914 until his death in 1919. He was one of only
two foreign-born Oregon governors. Born in Tavistock,
England, he came to Oregon with his parents in 1871 at
17 years of age. He purchased a farm two years later and
married Isabel Carpenter on June 5, 1875. He planted this
redwood on their wedding day.

Gov. Withycombe was known for his vision
and commitment to making Oregon one of the country's
greatest agricultural states.

Location of the tree
The Gov. Withycombe Giant Sequoia is located in Washington County approximately 20 feet east of State Highway 219, 300 feet south of the Grabel Road / 219 intersection, 3 miles south of Hillsboro.

The girth of the tree is 10.922 m measured at a height of 1.4 m (2002, Oregon Travel Information Council).
Its height is around 36.8808 m (2002, Oregon Travel Information Council).
This tree was planted around the year 1875, which makes it around 136 years old.

...

After .4 mile from the “rock,” you reach Elk Point with its concrete totem pole and views of the Willamette. Don’t come up here hungry because the savory scents from the Charthouse Restaurant will certainly have your mouth watering. Then start a long downhill stretch which winds along the bluff with surprisingly few views of the city below. Continue just more than 2 miles, passing by the Duniway Park lilac garden, to a stone building that formerly served as a restroom. Return as you came (yes, up that hill) or take a short cut through the park onto a dirt path that climbs much more quickly but cuts nearly a half mile off the distance.

I knew I was there once... along Terwilliger at the Charthouse Restaurant

In 1971, Oregon became the first state to dedicate state money for the construction of bike paths. (http://www.flickr.com/photos/ufobike/5594917595/)

Here's one I've gone past at least a hundred times... and today I finally noticed it.

Okay, its been a week.

Next time you are at the Hillsboro Fairgrounds Max stop, get off the platform, walk towards the baseball diamonds along the sidewalk (West). Just as you "round the bend", look Southwest and up.

It has a companion right next to it.

I was guessing that it would be associated with the Hillsboro Airport MAX station, but in the online images I searched, I couldn't see it.

Thanks!

This can be found on the PSU campus in Downtown Portland.
