View Full Version : Appendicitis? Cycling after the experience?

No, I'm not in the hospital, but today I'm not feeling well, and I've got my concerns (I've had diverticulitis (http://www.umm.edu/ency/article/000257.htm)). This got me to thinking...

After having a laparotomy or laparoscopy, how long before you can get on a bike and ride?

Many Thanks!

We usually tell folks to take it easy for 3-4 weeks post-appendectomy, give or take a week. More than anything how you feel will be the bigger barometer of when to get out to ride again.

Two suggestions though. First, don't push too hard to get out again, last thing you want to create stress on the incisions and underlying tissues which can lead to the build up of rather painful scar tissue. Second, check with our doc/surgeon on when they think it will be appropriate for you to get back on the horse.

And, yes, I am a RN, it's not like I'm just making this stuff up!

Well, Maybe not NEEDED (I'm feeling better) that, but it's good to know.

After my hernia surgery, my doctor gave me what seemed like the most sensible advice I had heard in a while: "If it hurts, don't do it." Following this advice, I found I was able to ride very gently a week after surgery, and I continued to follow it until I could do everything I usually did without pain. There's no magic formula; you just need to be aware and careful.

Good to hear you're feeling better, K'Tesh - nice running into you tonight during my evening commute!
