Got this as a PM from a forum member, don't know why he didn't share it with the group, so I'll share it while respecting his privacy.
Hey, seeing this post brought back some good memories. A few years back, I rode the whole coast in a day. I was on a cross bike and started about 5 a.m.
It took all day. I started in Manoa (just up a valley from Honolulu) and went to Waikiki, then just took a left. For the most part, there was plenty of traffic for most of the ride. Tourists, commuters, busses etc. While most of the ride was stressful (do to traffic) What I enjoyed was the early morning in the Hanauma Bay area and the afternoon up in Kaena point -- which you will miss if you follow the route on that map you posted. --- Thats where the crossbike came in... it was a very long day and riding the last bit through Pearl City and downtown was confusing... But a memorable experience. What I think is the best ride on the island is the Tantalus loop. I could ride that again and again all day long. In both directions. Shady, great views, few cars, but the corners can be a little mossy.
Good to know!

Neat article from Hawaiian Airlines' inflight magazine Hana Hou!

I especially liked the part about the 24hours of Tantalus race, which I'm having a lot of trouble locating any more info on.
Aloha!
