I am looking for a safe and scenic overnight bike camping trip to do this October.

The trip requirements:

-Need to be able to camp somewhere cool and not annoying
-30-50 miles one way
-mainly on pavement
-mainly flat but some hills fine
-wide shoulders or rural roads
-Can do in a weekend.
-Taking Max to get started OK.
-Please provide route!

We are beginners, and loved the Banks-Vernonia trail, but want to do something different this time.

I will be going with one other person and we both have entry-level touring bikes (Trek and Surly)

http://escapevelocipede.blogspot.com/ - Michael has some good trips. I also hear that Oxbow is a good destination.

I'd take max to Cascade Station (IKEA). Bicycle to Marine Drive. Go East on Marine Drive to Troutdale. Get on the Historic Highway East and continue to Cascade Locks. It meets all of your criteria (except for one hill in Corbett).

Insta, my fave is the Nestucca River Rd. --- take the MAX to the end of the line in Hillsboro, then follow these maps/directions:

about 45 miles to the Dovre BLM campground. A beautiful and quiet ride (other than the first few miles out of Hillsboro). A pretty good climb for about 6 miles or so up over the crest, then down the Nestucca to the Dovre campground.

I also like the Gorge ride, out to Ainsworth State Park, that was posted. Not as quiet/low traffic as the Nestucca, but great scenery & showers at Ainsworth SP. Not sure how far that one is...probably less than 30 miles from the end of the MAX in Gresham. Here's the maps for that one:

don't forget to report back on your ride... enjoy!

i think the climb out of carlton to dovre is longer than 6 miles. the climb starts just a few miles out of carlton and from there it's all uphill. some parts mellow, other parts steeper.

my girlfriend, housemate and i just did this ride a few weeks ago. we had a blast...

r-p, you're right, it's more like 10 plus miles of a climb. Not hellacious, but pretty constant, about 2500 feet of cumulative elevation gain.
