Me and a couple buddies are entering the Portland Triathalon (www.portlandtri.com). I'm doing the cycling part of it. I'm new to cycling, I just barely started riding about 2 months ago commuting to and from work. The cycling leg of the triathalon looks to be 25 miles long through central Portland. I am hoping to get some advice as to how to start training for this endeavor, we are not looking to be incredibly competetive, but I dont want to look like a complete idiot out there. Any tips? Advice?

Chopstic, I'm not a competitive cyclist, but I can tell you what I've learned over the year that I've been cycling more seriously (also something I've learned as a stage rally driver):
More seat time.
For cycling, that means up your mileage. The longer rides you do, the more ably you'll be able to do long rides.
Hm. That sentence needs a little work, but you can tell what I mean. :)
If you currently commute 5-10 miles, figure out a longer route to take, at least one direction. Ride it often, and figure out how to add more miles as you get more comfortable with the new distance.
25 miles used to seem like a lot to me; now it's a standard ride!
Another good tip: eat before you're hungry, and drink before you're thirsty. Hydrate well, especially if it's a hot day. Alternate water with gatorade or some sort of sports drink to keep the ol' electrolytes all balanced.
