As promised last week, TriMet has just released the online version of their Bikes on MAX survey.
They say it’s, “the most comprehensive study of bikes on light rail transit conducted to date in the U.S.”
This survey is not to be confused with the version they’ve been passing out to cyclists aboard trains […]

In light of the attention being given to the TriMet Bikes on MAX survey, I want to encourage everyone to not distribute and complete copies of the on-board survey.
I linked to a PDF of it yesterday solely to present the information, not to encourage folks to print it out and send it in.
An […]

There is mounting evidence that TriMet is considering a shift in their bike policy that may include a rush-hour prohibition of bikes on trains and an increased emphasis on bike parking at stations to encourage cyclists to park-and-ride.
Currently, bicycles are allowed on MAX trains during all hours with some restrictions. For […]

Bikes don’t always mix well on crowded trains.(File photo)
A large increase in the amount of bicycles being taken on MAX trains has been a simmering problem for TriMet since the beginning of spring. That increase, combined with confusion over their policies has led to a situation in dire need of attention.
I heard from one […]

I-205 bike path mess got you down?TriMet says, “let’s party!”.(File photo)
In case you haven’t heard (or seen the banners), TriMet is throwing a party for cyclists next Friday (7/13).
The reason? Bribery, plain and simple.
Their big light rail construction project has torn up several parts of the I-205 bike path, so they figure […]

The Portland Mercury blog reported an incident this morning that happened yesterday afternoon between a TriMet LIFT bus (the smaller ones used for transporting disabled riders) and a bicyclist near the intersection of NE Multnomah Street and NE Grand Avenue (Google Map of location).
Here’s an excerpt from the account published by the […]

Just got this from a reliable source:
“A MAX train hits a bicyclist in front of Gresham’s City Hall this evening. TriMet officials say two bicyclists admit they were trying to “beat the train”. The first cyclist made it — the second was struck by the front of the train. The victim, who […]

Still life with MAX.File photo
Our friends over at TriMet are looking for some help with their bike facilities and other bike-related projects.
They just listed a want ad for a Bike Programs Intern. Here’s the job description:
“Assist in the development of a TriMet bicycle facilities master plan. Collect, research and evaluate bike, bike parking and […]

I just got off the phone with Eric Hesse from TriMet and he confirmed that a cyclist was involved in a collision with a MAX train at 4:08pm today.
According to Josh Collins with TriMet Operations Communications, a cyclist riding northbound on SW 9th ran into the second car of a two-car MAX train that was […]

Sharon Fekety, the woman who crashed her bike and broke her arm last month while attempting to cross a MAX track, has received a second response (here’s the first) from TriMet GM Fred Hansen.
Fekety wrote Hansen to encourage TriMet to improve their signage and warn bicyclists about potentially dangerous MAX crossings.
Here is an excerpt from […]

In the past two weeks, I’ve received three separate stories from readers about TriMet fare inspectors and security personnel pulling cyclists off trains for various reasons.
At issue is how security personnel are enforcing TriMet’s official policy governing bicycles on MAX trains. I realize that security personnel are contracted by a […]

Last November, Washington County Commissioner Dick Schouten boarded the Blue Line MAX train at the Hatfield Government Center in Hillsboro. He hung his bike on a hook, sat down, and dozed off for just a few stops.
By the time he opened his eyes, his bike was gone.
Schouten filed […]

Two weeks ago, I shared the story of Sharon Fekety. She crashed her bike while attempting to cross a pair of MAX train tracks at I-205 and W Burnside, which resulted in her left arm being fractured in three places.
Fekety was concerned that her crash was the result of TriMet crews using grease on […]
