Persistence leads to another bike recovery

Posted on May 1st, 2006 at 7:43 am.

[Re-united with owner.]

I’m happy to report that over the weekend, the vigilance and awareness of the bike community scored yet another victory over bike thieves.
On Saturday, Carl Larson noticed a nice Blue Schwinn Homegrown mountain bike in front of Red Light Clothing Exchange in downtown Portland. The bike looked very similar to a […]

Another stolen bike recovered!

Posted on April 21st, 2006 at 8:50 am.

I love when I wake up to emails like this:
“Jonathan,
Wanted to let you know I recovered the bike yesterday.
I can’t be sure, but it looks like the response posted on BikePortland.org had a lot to do with the bikes current “owner” contacting me to arrange a return. It was a pretty sketchy […]

First U-lock winner announced

Posted on April 19th, 2006 at 6:25 am.

[Happy and secure.]

Back in March I said I would give away a Kryptonite Evolution U-lock to a randomly selected bike theft victim. To be eligible, you had to list your stolen bike and provide me with a case number from the Portland Police Bureau.
The first winner is Jay Fields! Jay lost her blue […]

Portland Rock Gym loans U-locks

Posted on March 30th, 2006 at 4:18 pm.

Portland Rock Gym has a cool little program to help keep their customer’s bikes safe. They have a big sign on their rack (see photo) that says “Cable locks are not secure”. Then, they take it a step further by loaning out U-locks to members that need one.
According to Yuval, […]

Bike theft out of hand, Police want to help

Posted on March 28th, 2006 at 1:03 pm.

What the heck is going on? Seems like every time I log on there are more stolen bikes to publish. There are 107 listed so far and I’m averaging about one a day for the past 2 months…and that’s only what gets listed here! There are surely many other bikes stolen throughout […]

Stolen bike recovered by shop employees

Posted on March 21st, 2006 at 7:23 am.

[Recovered!]

Just got word that we’ve recovered yet another stolen bike! Here’s how it went down:
Last Friday, two guys walked into the downtown Bike Gallery store. The employees were suspicious because they seemed to be high and they left a nice, unlocked green Kona parked outside. When the guys left the store one […]

Sign up for the Stolen Bike Digest

Posted on March 20th, 2006 at 6:33 am.

In an effort to recover more stolen bikes, I’d like to formally introduce the new BikePortland.org Stolen Bike Digest.
The Digest is a free, weekly email that will be sent to bike shops (and anyone else who’s interested) and will contain all the stolen bikes listed on this site during that week. The […]

Bikes not safe on MAX?

Posted on March 9th, 2006 at 7:29 pm.

Locks needed?

We all know the bike theft problem is bad…but it turns out even bikes hanging by the hooks on a MAX train aren’t safe. This was just posted to a local email list:

“This morning I arrived at the MAX stop just as the train was arriving so instead of locking my bike at […]

Bike thief wants job, gets arrested instead

Posted on February 24th, 2006 at 10:08 am.

I can’t get enough of stolen bike recovery stories. This one, involving a bike recently listed here, is one of the best I’ve ever heard.
On Monday a reader named “jeffcycles” got his beloved Eddy Merckx stolen from the PSU campus. He quickly spread the word and told everyone he knew to keep an […]

More stolen bikes recovered

Posted on February 14th, 2006 at 3:13 pm.

Because of savvy BikePortland.org readers, we’ve recovered two bikes in the past two weeks. I just love it when this happens and it’s proof that by keeping your eyes open and regularly checking the Stolen Bike Listings we can leverage the power of community to re-unite bikes with their owners. Here are the […]

Cops sell stolen bikes on eBay

Posted on February 1st, 2006 at 9:44 am.

[Check to see if your bike is listed]

A few days ago, a BikePortland.org reader noticed his stolen bike listed on Craigslist. Eager for revenge on the suspected thief he contacted the seller. Turns out the seller was a nice guy who had unknowingly bought the bike through the Police on eBay. […]

Ode to a recovered bike

Posted on January 31st, 2006 at 8:16 am.

[Reverend Phil]

Renowned bike funnist Reverend Phil recently found his beloved “Duff#5″ (full story here) and was moved to write this touching ode:
She has returned to me.
Let it ring from the depths of the Shanghai Tunnels to the heights of Council Crest.
Let it ring from every bridge, from the Freemont “bikelane” to the Hawthorne gravel path.
Let […]

Questions for Kryptonite?

Posted on January 26th, 2006 at 8:10 am.

Just a quick note…one of Kryptonite’s top tech guys is in town and I’m meeting him for dinner tonight. Do you have any questions you’d like me to ask him? I plan to touch base about the latest in bike security and hear what they’ve learned about lock design since the Bic Pen […]

Bike theft problem hits home

Posted on January 5th, 2006 at 12:47 am.

Just realized that my bike got stolen last night. It was unlocked in my backyard (I know, my mistake) and they walked right up, detached the Burley trailer and made off with it.
It was a kooky, unique bike (see photo and specs below) that had sentimental value and good, quality parts. […]

“Unstolen” bike ready for release

Posted on January 3rd, 2006 at 12:07 am.

The Wise Old Bicycle Guy has been working on a unique way to combat our growing bike theft problem. His idea is to “unsteal” bikes by fixing them up from donated parts and giving them back to bike theft victims…for free.
He’s got a “bike-shop quality” mountain bike (he used to be a […]

The Southeast Precinct of the Portland Police Bureau have started a bike theft awareness campaign.
Officers have been standing on the Hawthorne Bridge in the early morning and passing out forms for cyclists to fill out and return to them. According to one cyclist, who was stopped last Tuesday at 6:30 AM, the […]
