City releases dates, locations for 2014 Sunday Parkways events

Mark your calendars! The Portland Bureau of Transportation has just announced the dates and locations for the five Sunday Parkways events for this year.

Here are the details:

East Portland Sunday Parkways
May 11, 2014 ~ 11am-4pm (7 miles)
Celebrate Mother’s Day with a tour of East Portland. Whether walking, biking, rolling or dancing along the route, take time to stop by Glenwood, Bloomington, and Ed Benedict Parks for a spot of food, vendors, music and more.

North Portland Sunday Parkways
June 22, 2014 ~ 11am-4pm (9.5 miles)
Cruise along the scenic Willamette Boulevard, and then glide towards Peninsula, Arbor Lodge, Kenton, Columbia Annex and McCoy Parks to enjoy an array of activities, food, music, vendors and fun.

Northeast Portland Sunday Parkways
July 27, 2014 ~ 11am-4pm (8 miles)
Explore the Northeast Neighborhood Greenways while you make your way around the Northeast Portland route. Don’t forget to stop by Woodlawn, Alberta and Fernhill Parks where a collection of fun activities, festive music, and delicious food awaits you.

Southeast Portland Sunday Parkways
August 24, 2014 ~ 11am-4pm (7 miles)
Spend a warm summer day walking and rolling around the Southeast Sunday Parkways. While you’re at it, take a few moments to explore Laurelhurst, Colonel Summers and Ivon Parks to grab a bite to eat, listen to tunes, and join some activities.

Southwest Portland Sunday Parkways
September 28, 2014 ~ 11am-4pm (6 miles)
End the Sunday Parkways season by taking advantage of the route, including a walk-only trail. Whether rolling down Troy Street or exploring the SW Trails with its rolling hills and scenic views, don’t forget to stop by Gabriel Park, Multnomah Village and Hillsdale Shopping Center for food, music, activities and more.

Last year, PBOT says 85,480 people participated in the four Sunday Parkways events (one was canceled). This year they’re hoping to break the 100,000 mark.

Why do they always do these in the exact same locations each year? Are these the only 5 locations in the city with good enough infrastructure to host a ride like this? For example – why is the East Portland ride always so far south. What about bringing the ride up further north, maybe using the Burnside lanes as an anchor. Go through Montivilla, by the pump track in Ventura Park. It would show both the good and the bad in these neighborhoods and perhaps get some discussion started about how to better connect areas like schools and parks and commuter paths.

Absolutely. North Tabor in our visioning also is interested. How about a loop AROUND Mount Tabor with internal routes highlighting access points North, south east and west without using Divsion or 60th. (Yamhill, Harrison, Salmon and NE 62nd/Scott drive).

On May 17th Kidical Mass will be doing a ride centered around the Ventura Pump Track. Why don’t you come ride with us? You don’t have to be or have kids; we’d love to have adults showing an interest in future generations of riders.

Thanks – hadn’t heard about that ride. We live in the neighborhood and my son (6) rides the track a couple of times a week. He’s been pedaling since he was 4 – unfortunately its hard to take him anywhere in this neighborhood by bike. We usually have to put the bikes in a car and drive somewhere safe to ride (and I’m a 20+ yr commuter…).

We are looking at an outer NE event when the new neighborhood greenways are built and ready for prime time. Great idea. Thanks.

Yes, please!

And I miss the downtown route, I had a blast on that one.

Hmm…that could be an SP almost every other week for the summer…add in some of the surrounding communities doing cyclovias to fill out the schedule…no objection here!

EXACTLY. Portland once again shows that they want to ignore S Madison and the armpit that is 205/84 and Gateway. You’ll find nothing there but a wretched hive of scum and villainy. (Also, The Gateway Green multi-use mtn bike trail, Lumberyard, though I can’t put words in their mouth, would, I’m sure put sponsorship towards having events that enriched their neighborhood, etc) (Also, I live there.)

No Mount Tabor Loop? That is disappointing.

We got scooped by the Doggie Dash on Mt Tabor on this date (yes, pun intended).

Yet again, outer SW Portland, where bike modeshare is the lowest and could use the most encouragement (and is where I live), gets the last event of the year. As evidenced by last year’s cancelled event, weather can turn quickly and muck things up. This is a fantastic event, and SW could use a little boost.

I agree – why are the east portland and SW portland events in the shoulder seasons? If anything, the low current bike/walk modeshares in those areas seem like a reason to be sure to hold those events in the prime of summer in order to reach the widest audience.

A great graphic. I’ve usually had a hard time remembering the location and date for each Sunday Parkway. I have no excuses now…
