Weekend Event Guide: Holiday shopping, riding, and partying

Swift has some big plans for Portland,
and you can be a part of it tonight.

Tis the season to be jolly, ride bikes, and huddle up for warmth with friends old and new. Our list of upcoming events below will give you ample opportunity to do all three…

Tonight! — Midnight Mystery Ride
Meet at Ducketts Public House (825 N Killingsworth) for some pre-midnight karaoke and then ride en masse to a mystery destination. It’s Friday the 13th, so things could get spooky. More info here.

Tonight! — Swift Pop Up Shop and Video Premiere at Velo Cult (Fri – Sat)
Seattle-based Swift Industries (makers of fine panniers and bags) has a thing for Portland and they’re coming to their exclusive local dealer, Velo Cult, to unveil some very cool stuff. They’ll be setting up a satellite retail sewing shop at Velo Cult (1969 NE 42nd Ave), premiering their first-ever company video, and more. It starts tonight with a Video Release Happy Hour from 5:00 – 7:00 pm (video starts at 6:15). Then stop by tomorrow from 10:00 am – 6:00 pm to watch your new bag(s) sewn right in front of your eyes. More info here.

Saturday, December 14th

Cross Crusade Awards Party
Come celebrate the end of the 20th season of cyclocross fun with the Cross Crusade crew. There will be awards, merriment, and who knows what else. 7:00 pm at Indent Studio (1535 SE 9th).

Western Bikeworks $1,000,000 Warehouse Sale (Sat – Sun)

This looks like it might be the warehouse sale to end all warehouse sales. $1 million in bikes, parts, and gear up for grabs and everything is 30-80% off. It happens at the Velotech (Western’s parent company) warehouse just off NE Columbia Blvd out near the airport (5741 NE 87th Ave). Hours are 10:00 am – 4:00 pm all weekend.

Sunday, December 15th

Holiday Steam Train Ride along Oaks Bottom (meets at Milwaukie City Hall)
Join the folks from Bike Milwaukie for a ride to Oaks Park via the Springwater to check out the vintage steam locomotive that will be giving rides all weekend (note: this ride doesn’t include a train ride). They’ll ride up to OMSI where riders will stop for hot drinks (BYO) and check out the progress on the new light rail bridge. More info here (FB).

Easy Riders – Wilkes Neighborhood and Other East Portland Novelties
Meet Brad Reber and his nice, relaxed group of friends (I know them, they check out) for a 14 mile ride that explores east Portland’s neighborhood byways. They’ll roll through Parkrose Heights, Russell, and Glenfair neighborhoods to the Gresham border and then back for drinks and food at The Observatory (8115 SE Stark). Meets at 10:30 am at Bipartisan Cafe (7901 SE Stark). More info here.

I’m sure there are more great bike events happening this weekend. If we missed something, feel free to give it a shout-out in the comments.

I did a ride along the Springwater last weekend to check out the steam train. It’s pretty awesome. Very rare that you can get this close, let alone ride next to one of these monsters.

I just got a Campagnolo jacket for $30 at the Western Sale! Had to go a little out of my way to get there, but the deals are sick! Definitely worth checking out.
