Tonight is the annual carfree night at the big Winter Wonderland event out at Portland International Raceway (PIR, just north of Kenton). For several years now, organizers have promoted a “Bike the Lights” event (sponsored by Bike Gallery) where for $6 you can ride through the big light displays. It’s a lot of fun and kids love it! ($1 of your admission goes to the Bicycle Transportation Alliance).
It’s always cold and sometimes a bit rainy; but I’ve found that just adds to the winter spirit and makes everyone get a bit more cozy. And this year, if you need a bit more motivation to grab your friends and/or family and head out there, our friend Jeff Bernards says Beaverton Bakery has baked 1,500 cookies just for the event. They should taste quite good with a bit of hot cocoa.
So light up your bike and roll up to PIR tonight. Bike the Lights is from 5:00 to 9:00 pm and kids under 13 are free.
To get more of a feel for the event, check out a few photos from years past…
Yeah see, speaking of Jay Graves stories, THAT is the one I’ll remember: that warm van saved my Raynaud’s-afflicted girlfriend from having a truly bad time.
This was a great time last night. I rolled up with the Bike Farm group.
Big crowd! Cool to see everybody together having a good time. Lots of families and cyclists/cycles of all kinds.
Also had the highest concentration of Pugsleys (THREE) I’ve ever seen in one paved place.
How can you not have fun doing a few laps up there?
This is on my must-do bike fun ride list.
Two Pugsleys and a Moonlander actually! What a great time!
And, those cookies were very tasty between laps. Thanks Beaverton Bakery!
