The Portland Police are looking for the driver in a hit-and-run that occurred near the intersection of NE 104th and Weidler Street at about 9:00 pm tonight.
According to a PPB statement, officers responded to a call of a collision involving a man on a bicycle. When they arrived they found 48-year-old Brian Lyons of Happy Valley suffering from non-life-threatening injuries.
“The bicyclist told police that he was riding his bike westbound on Weidler in the bike lane when a vehicle traveling westbound turned right into him, then continued northbound on 104th Avenue,” reads the statement.
Lyons was thrown up and over the hood and then slammed onto the ground. He was transported to the hospital for treatment.
The suspect vehicle is described as a silver Subaru or Honda, possibly 2004 or 2005 model, four-door hatchback, with a tail or spoiler on the rear.
Anyone with information about this hit and run is asked to contact the Traffic Investigations Unit at (503) 823-2103, reference Portland Police Bureau Case Number 12-87176.

On an only slightly related matter, does anyone know what was going on with the MAX at 148th & Burnside last night around 6pm? There were fire trucks and cop cars and when I biked by I saw a bicycle in the midst of the knot of people on the platform. All the MAX trains were stopped along that line back into town. Whatever it was took a while to resolve.
What would really be a kick ass app for smartphones would be something that monitors for sirens or blue & red strobes then prompts the user to record the action.
Store a local copy while streaming the live feed to a secure news auction server. Normal people could make a few bucks for being a witness in the right place at the right time. The app itself would insure an influx of data from multiple POVs.
The AP Wire service could reimburse the data fees for upload and get a cut of the auction and licensing fees for a really good video.
The police might beat you for recording them.

But– but– doesn’t a car have license plates? Didn’t the driver get a driver’s license? Isn’t the car registered? I thought that meant the driver couldn’t get away with anything!

Yeah, a MAX driver told me that there’d been a collision between a blue line train and a person on a bicycle. Apparently the person is all right, although the bicycle was totaled. Didn’t tell me what happened though.

What with all the hullabaloo and emergency vehicles and prolonged shutdown of the line it seemed like maybe whatever happened had led to serious injuries or death. Glad to hear it may have been much less than that.
