Gettin’ dirty with MC Spandex

Still from ‘Get Dirty’ by
Robin Moore Productions.

Portland-based filmmaker Robin Moore has done it again. The man behind the phenomenal web video sensation, “Performance,” which parodied fixed gear and roadie culture, has released “Get Dirty,” which does the same to mountain bikers.

Moore’s latest is equally entertaining. Listen to the lyrics…they’re hilarious! Check it out below…

I love it! Musically this one is much catchier, I actually really like that beat, sounds great played through headphones with strong bass response.

It’s just a cynical way to sell Subaru Outbacks, same on you MC 😉

Perfect timing for the last bit of the short track season, a precursor for ‘cross – ‘catchy’ for sure.

But – an observation: ladies show up in hot tubs and in bars, in a cleavage/”rack” shot, and with a booty-shot reference to hard-tail.

Here’s hoping the next MC production has women sharing the stage a bit, in some sort of a non-objectified-eye-candy role. Since, you know – we get dirt all up in our grills right with all y’all boys.

I’m a female and I didn’t find it demeaning at all – it’s all in good fun and humor, at least to me.

that was hilarious. can’t wait for the ‘hard core commuters’ song, and then my own profile — the ‘way too cool for school lifestyle rider’. 😀

Sure, it is funny. But denying that women aren’t being objectified (and totally voiceless and unable to be “funny”) is BS. The guys get to act and rap and be people. The women are stage dressing and the focus is on their bodies. Somebody tell me that’s the most you want for you female friends, sisters and girlfriends.

You say it’s ok because it’s parody, but what is the parody in completely copying the booty-girl stereotypes from rap into this? That’s not humor, it’s just copying the same old sh*t.

@Naomi– I’m glad you’re not offended. But you aren’t the spokesperson for ladies everywhere. I’m looking forward to seeing you in short-shorts when you gladly volunteer to be in the next video.

Then make your own, bikingpotato. Ever seen a real hip-hop video? MC Spandex skewers cycling culture and hip-hop in one fell swoop!

I’d love to see a CX themed video but it might not work as CX devotees already have a self deprecating sense of humor to begin with. Bike advocates? That might be ripe for parody. A bunch of angry nerds both puffy and pasty from their lack of time spent on a bike dressed in day glow yellow jackets cruising City Hall…

Gettin’ big planning contracts
Then payin’ off my friends
Fight The Man and his bridge
Yo, this struggle never ends
Goin’ down to Salem, comin’ out a loser
But I got mad cred for my heavy Dutch cruiser

I’m looking forward to the cargo bike parody.

Also, people being easily offended suck the fun out of everything.

Compared to his previous video, this is pretty lame, IMHO. He hit it out of the park with “Performance.” One for two ain’t bad I suppose.

Just watched both videos and think this one is even funnier/better done than the previous.

I consider myself a proud feminist and love this parody! Poking fun at stereotypes is *the whole point*. I understand that folks have the right to their own reactions and of course respect that.

By the way, there’s nothing wrong with some “short shorts” in our bike culture. Team Beer is a huge fan. In fact, our men wear them with pride, and I’m pretty sure that they don’t feel too demeaned.

Enjoyed the latest video. However I think the lyrics in his lst video, Performance were more clever and varied in self-expression.

As for objectification of women’s bodies or should we say women cyclist’s bodies:

to counteract, I do believe this is a PERFECT opportunity for the all women cycling dance troupes to create their parody/satirical number …on guys just interested in women’s booty instead of her cycling strength/endurance/excellent health.

For those who are offended by the “objectification” of women in this video, please consider:

0:29 male hair stylist in half shirt

0:32 close-up shot of the male hipster’s package

0:46 I count 6 males and 5 females all dancing in the same style

1:20 one of the men in the background is topless

1:23 male in short shorts

2:12 male shaking his booty

2:13 man lifts shirt to display “dirt money” tattoo

The male has the voice in this video because it is his video.

True there are sexy shots of women as well, but on balance this video is… well, pretty well balanced. In other words, this is a parody, everyone is acting silly, lighten up.

See I thought it was a humorous jab at the uber-macho roadie and mtn bike male communities, not an objectification of women.

Although I have to say that I occasionally watch “performance” just for the chorus.

If it’s not funny to a feminist, it should be abolished.

“that sh*t cost me six G’s, I crash it into trees.” So funny.

and anyone who’s offended obviously didn’t listen.
“…so don’t gimme that dirty look, I wrote the dirty book.”

Excellent production.

Wow, did you all even *read* bikingpotato’s post? There was a hope that the next video had a more prominent role for the women in it, rather than just as eye candy. The post is prefaced by “just an observation” – some people here are reading a lot more into it than the original poster seems to be saying.

Sure, this video pokes fun at stereotypes, and kudos to Big Kahuna (#17) for pointing out the objectification shots of men, but it’s also possible to poke fun at the same stereotypes by reversing them.

I think MC Spandex is doing some great videos, but I agree with bikingpotato – it’d be great to see a woman up there in a future video as the main player.

How come people are so focused on the bikingpotato post and no one mentions use of the word “gay” as an insult at #8? That’s way more offensive to me than any personal insult.

Pretty much the whole hip-hop/rap video business is about using enticingly-clad females as stage dressing, eye-candy, and general sexual objectification… Mr. Spendes’s two parodies address and lampoon this characteristic about as well as they do the various cycling quirks.

“It is very, very easy not to be offended by a book. You just have to shut it.”

Salman Rushdie

The same goes for a parody video.

Or perhaps a woman should make the next video her way.

Red Five (#10): I’m more embarrassed by other riders’ road behavior than by someone’s creativity. I almost hit a helmet-less girl who blasted a red light at a highway intersection Saturday. She couldn’t stop her fixed-gear bike going down a slight hill. Would have been very sad irony as she would have dented my “Share the Road” license plate. I also suspect a non-cyclist driver wouldn’t have foreseen the situation.

Anyway, I think the video is cool. It’s the WNBR that embarrasses me to be a cyclist… 😉

I also find post #8 extremely offensive and think it should be removed.

I don’t think they lyrics were as good as his last one, but it was still really really funny.

I don’t think he has any obligation to feature a woman because he makes them and he stars in them.

You know that South Park episode, where all the self righteous folks stop everything they’re doing so they can bask in their own farts, inhaling deeply, proud of themselves?

That’s what this comment thread seems like.

It’s a funny little small time video, worth a laugh and a forward. Not a women’s rights discussion. Don’t like it? Don’t watch it or forward it.

Love to see this as the uber-fit crusty XC racer vs the FR shuttle bros.

As one of the women in this music video, I would like to state that every single one of these women is a bad ass cyclist. We bare ourselves scantily not to demoralize women but to show that we are females who ride DIRTY!!! We support MC Spandex and this video.

He is plainly making a statement at how not only Hip-hop but ALSO cycling is a male dominated, chauvinistic world. Speaking for all of us ladies, we want equality in cycling!! Rock on DJ Spandex!

if you look at the comments, plenty of us got it. Both videos are awesome in my book- laugh until you cry funny, relevant and well done.

Looking forward to another poke at biking culture.
