Poll: Where should PBOT hold the September Sunday Parkways?

Sunday Parkways Southeast-59

Which part of the city should get the
September Sunday Parkways? Vote below.

The Transportation Options Division within the Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) recently announced the routes and dates of four of the five Sunday Parkways events planned for this summer.

The September edition of the event remains the “Mystery Sunday Parkways.” PBOT has announced a date, but they’ve remained tight-lipped about further details.

A source at PBOT says they’ve got route proposals and requests out for five locations — including two that would take Sunday Parkways to the west side of the river for the first time.

Just for fun, I thought I’d host a poll to help PBOT decide. Vote below for where you’d like to see them take Sunday Parkways in September:

I voted for Northwest. I would love to see a downtown commercial area go carfree. I think it would help spur carfree activism (which our city is in dire need of) and it would show Pearl District businesses the power of non-motorized consumption!

Downtown!

Does the Ed Benedict Park/Lents location mean that they’ll close off part of Powell Blvd.? I know that the east side has received plenty of attention and bike lanes but it would be great to see Powell, and maybe Foster, with less cars.

I know that Powell is technically a highway but it still raises red flags for me on the bike.

NW 23rd! They have been trying to build parking garages on the street for years. It would be great to show them how successful a car-free area can be.

At the risk of appearing suicidal, let’s try to put Sunday Parkways in Southwest!

The majority of folks living in this area do NOT ride bikes or use transit regularly, and yet are among the loudest proponents of safety for their kids. They may have a hard time putting safe streets for kids and over-dependence on local car use together in the same equation. Let’s make it clearer for everybody.

Putting Sunday Parkways in SW Portland (Hillsdale? Raleigh Hills? Multnomah Village?) could be a very POSITIVE eye-opener for residents in Southwest Portland — illustrating that reduced motor traffic on residential streets would go a long way in making those streets safer for their children.

Definitely downtown.

NW 23rd seconded!

We’re ripe for car-lite/free demonstrations and traffic calming. Imagine an open promenade for shoppers, cyclists and walkers in front of all the shops and cafes. The retailers could sure use a shot in the arm after all the construction is done. What better way than this?

it would be sweet to have it on 23rd and have that connected with oldtown/pearl district by way of lovejoy, glisan, or everet. even cooler would be to connect it all the way to the waterfront.

lance… i didn’t make up the poll options… they are based on information from PBOT about locations they are considering. And while I assume “southwest” to mean the residential areas… for all I know they could be considering SW downtown!

Downtown/Park Blocks!

Maybe a loop — Park Blocks, Flanders, Naito, Jefferson. Or use SW 2nd instead of Naito.

NW has some great parks for activity/food/event hubs – Wallace park and especially Jamison Park downtown – essentially a water park, which would be fun for kids on a hot summer day. Connect to the b-ball and boccee courts in the North Park Blocks, perhaps? A PDX marathon training run that could take advantage of the nearby Leif Erikson trail as well as the Sunday Parkways route?

Although a Sellwood route would be a great excuse to close that skinny little river bridge to car traffic and pedal across free from fear for a change. Imagine!

We can forget all our troubles, forget all our cars and go
Downtown, things’ll be great when you’re
Downtown, don’t wait a minute more,
Downtown, everything’s waiting for you

Ideally, I’d love the route to go through NW and SW, but that would mean gumming up W Burnside (at two locations, no less), which may be too much for the city to bear.

Southwest, please! And no, Downtown is not Southwest Portland. Multnomah Village/Gabriel Park or Hillsdale (although that would tick off all those Washington County-ites who use Hillsdale as a pass-through). But Hillsdale has a Sunday farmer’s market and it would be so great to see Capitol set aside for one day for just bikes/peds.

We’ve got crappy connectivity and some frightening routes for bikes. I know plenty of people who won’t let their kids ride bikes and/or won’t ride themselves because of their fear of riding out here. But if we all got on our bikes together without intervention by cars for just one day, it would be great!

I also think downtown/Pearl/NW would be good. They’ve done the easy, inner east side areas where logistically it’s pretty easy to pull-off plenty of times. Plus, having Sunday Parkways in these areas is kind of like preaching to the choir. Let’s have one in an area where it’s a little more of a big deal to close the streets to cars. It is Sunday after all.

SE Woodstock, Fo Sho.
We need to bring the bike community together here.
I will flyer… just let me know!
I have no prob hitting up the N. Assn, Reed, I will post the net, etc…

39th to 72nd could have a large portion blocked from traffic, tie into the park in between with vendors and music, bands, all kinds of cool…

Let’s do this thing! I have the DJ equipment just screaming to play 80’s too!

Woodstock and Sellwood need not be mutually exclusive. Combined, they make an excellent candidate with Reed College in the middle! Imagine tying in Woodstock Park, Sellwood Park and Pool, the business districts, and even Oaks Park Amusement Park!

Washington Square!

No, seriously Downtown to include the esplanade, park blocks, the new and old fountains, the Pearl. 6 hours of uter traffica chaos. you could throw a Crit into the middle of the thing to make it interesting.
