Today, the Bicycle Business League and the Bicycle Transportation Alliance delivered a letter to Portland Mayor Sam Adams in support of the Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030 signed by 127 local businesses.

The list includes many usual suspects (bike companies and bike teams), but also some major corporations such as wind power company Vestas, insurance company The Standard, Walsh Construction, Adidas, Tazo Tea, the law firm of Ater Wynne LLP, ad giant Wieden + Kennedy, and others (full list pasted below).

Here’s the text of the letter:

We, the undersigned Portland businesses, are writing you to support the adoption and implementation of the Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030.

We care about the reliable delivery of goods and services, affordable mobility for products and people, and healthy and productive employees.

Portland has achieved a nationally – and internationally-recognized “brand” as a livable, bike-friendly city. But in order to keep and hone that competitive edge (while cities like New York, San Francisco, Seattle and Denver aggressively expand their bicycling networks) we need to innovate and invest in our active transportation assets.

Fortunately, shifting our spending to areas in which we get great returns on investment – like moving people cheaply by bicycle – is a smart strategy in tough economic times. Even the small investments the City of Portland has made in biking facilities in the last decade have already paid off enormously.
Biking and walking are healthy and affordable transportation options for our employees and our customers, and will be integral to reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and fighting global climate change.

The Portland Bicycle Plan for 2030 offers a path to achieving these goals. We support the Plan, and we support its expedient implementation.

Yay! Don’t forget, you can continue to show your support – or show it for the first time – by attending the rally at City Hall scheduled for this Thursday Feb. 4th @ 1:30 PM. There is also an informative pre-rally ride meeting at the Salmon St. Fountain @ 11:30 am. Participate in Healthy Streets.

Webtrends? Not on the list?

My thanks to those businesses who DO support cycling!

Nice! I’m going to keep that list handy as a shopping guide.

Come to think of it, a bike-friendly Portland shopping guide would be a nice publication to have on a regular basis.

Surprised there aren’t more professional service firms.

And no River City? No Bike Gallery? Huh?

OHSU would have signed but this is the first I’ve heard about the letter. We’ve sponsored BTA events and I’m a BTA member. Somehow, this never made it to my desk. We sent our own letter of support to the City during the public process. I’m sure you’d find similar stories of support from River City, Bike Gallery, et al.

I own a small local professional service company and we would have signed on, had we only known about this. We do try to be informed but this one got by us.

I suspect there are many more companies like Mark Wheeler’s that would lend support but are not on that short list.

We would have supported and signed it (Laughing Planet Cafe), but our company was not aware of it. I am curious how companies found out about this? Please let me know. Thanks!
