Build It Rally

With the Portland Bicycle Plan up for adoption next week, our leaders in City Hall need to hear loud and clear that we want them to dig deep into their pockets and their politics to just Build It!
The Build It campaign is going strong. The BTA reports the Facebook page could hit 1,000 fans and businesses are lining up in support. There’s also a Build It ride and work party this Sunday.
All wonkiness aside, there are two simple reasons I want Portland to Build It…

i was reluctant to get involved with this campaign, because i do not want to be seen as a cheerleader for facilities, but on reviewing the plan i find it includes a proposal to examine repeal of the mandatory sidepath law, and the specific bike lane treatments proposed are “advisory” rather than mandatory (i.e., dashed lines). so count me in.

actually, the business about “advisory” bike lanes is more complicated than that. these are for only the lowest volume, most narrow roads. on higher volume roads, they are still pushing for separated facilities. nonetheless, there are one or two things to like about the plan:

We just had our first daughter and while safety on the streets has always been a concern, creating good places for her to ride has become a priority.
I certainly get where you are coming from.
