Weekend Event Guide: New Years Edition

It’s (almost) the New Year!

We’ve gone into some detail already about several New Years Day rides — and now more have been added, making a grand total of five! Here’s the rundown (minus the sold-out Cycle Wild camping trip), plus a Saturday ride for good measure.

Friday, January 1, 2010

9:00am: Up! and ATOM Ride
ATOM stands for “Ankney/Thurman/Over-the-Mountain.” The ride starts on the east side, and involves caffeine and adventure. Meet at Stumptown on SW 3rd and Pine (in true DIY spirit, the Ankeny portion of the ride is up to you). The plan is to meet up with the BTA ride.

10:00am: West Side New Years Ride
West siders, this ride is for you! Fifteen mile loop, with baked goodies and hot chocolate at the halfway point. Meet at Griffith Park Stage in Beaverton, right near city hall.

Noon: BTA New Years Day Ride
This annual ride is always a blast. Bring in the New Year with a low-key cruise around “The Best and Worst of 2009” with veteran ride leader and commentator Carl Larson. Ends at a secret location with free coffee. Bring cookies for the cookie potluck.

Noon: Portland Wheelmen New Year’s Day Ride
Not to exceed twenty miles. Leaves from Battleship Memorial in Waterfront Park. Scroll down on web page for listing.

6:00pm: Vegan Dinner Ride, Special Birthday Edition
Meet at SE Taylor and 19th to leave at 6:15 sharp for this monthly social ride to selected vegan eating and drinking establishments. All are welcome! They’re on Twitter now, too.

Saturday, January 2

10:30am: Wanderlust Men’s Cycling
A chill, social ride for men. Something new every week. Leaves from Holladay Park at NE 11th and Holladay.

A very happy turn-of-the-decade to you all! If you know about any other weekend events we should include here, let us know! And if you do something fun on bikes, tell us about it below.

Note: the BTA ride will definitely not be done by 1:30. More like 2:30 or 3. Plan accordingly.

Also: don’t plan on learning of any earthshattering “best and worst of 2009” picks. Do plan on learning about projects recently completed or underway and discussing them as we ride.

Correction: The Cycle Wild trip did not become “sold out” – it filled up. Cycle Wild has never, does not, and will never charge for its trips or classes. Cycle Wild’s events are free, and it’s services are freely available to the public.

Some Cycle Wild events go to state, county or local parks which charge a site fee or use fee – that fee is paid by individuals, never by Cycle Wild.

BTW, the camping trip was fantastic – 16 people rode out from Portland and stayed in the cabins at Stub Stewart. Photos will be up soon.
