This year, Singlespeed ‘Cross Worlds goes “Beyond Thunderdome”

I just came across the event poster for this year’s Singlespeed Cyclocross World Championships and felt it was worth sharing:

Here’s the copy from the top in case you can’t read it:
“Racers searching for their destiny… A tribe of spectators waiting for a hero…
In a race battling to survive, they face Portland determined to rule.”

The racing takes place on November 7-8th. If you’ve missed previous years, you’ll want to put these dates on your calendar, because next year the SSCXWC will travel to a different host city (and, in true SSCXWC style, the 2009 race will help decide who hosts in 2010).

I just love the spirit and fun the organizers bring to this event. Check out some of the verbage from the event website:

This race will be less the traditional test of speed, endurance and technical prowess and more Thunder Dome. Two teams enter, one team leaves. A battle worthy of a song, nay an anthem, powerful enough to revive Tina Turner’s career, convince Mel Gibson to remake the Mad Max episodes, and ultimately propel single speed cyclocross through the apocalypse and into the other side. Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls… racing time is here.

Online registration is now open.

They told me that this was the last year they were going to do it. So if you have not been out to experience the zaniness, this is the year.

I wonder how many people will be driving to the venue (a race track for cars and motorcycles), and of those people, who will see the irony?

Can anyone think of another way that exemplifies the flagrant misuse of fossil fuels?

What created, or fueled (ha! get it?) the apocalypse as portrayed in the terrific trilogy?
That’s right, driving to bike events.

Who runs Stumptown? Master Blaster runs Stumptown!

Mike (#8) – Ironic, eh? If anyone here hasn’t seen the original “Mad Max”, rent it – while the later installments fall squarely into post-apoc territory, the original film shows a world running out of oil and not too dissimilar to our own…

Last time I checked, Tinaa’s career was just fine. She just had the 2nd highest grossing tour worldwide.
