Our very own Elly Blue will be part of a panel discussion at the Sustainable Transportation Solutions Summit happening this Thursday at Reed College.

With global warming and gas prices grabbing headlines, we need to rethink how we get around, and Oregonians are leading the way forward. Experts on bicycling, public transit, carsharing, and much more will discuss recent turns in our transportation system and share insight on possible routes to a sustainable future.

Oh? Are you really excited to hear the Zipcar sales pitch. These are a joke. I went to the one at the South Waterfront and it was mostly about buying a condo down there, using Zipcar, or buying a Smartcar.
Personally, I don’t understand why JM gives these obvious greenwashing events any press without qualifying them. He loses credibility with me ever time he does it…

I was a presenter for the BTA at that South Waterfront conference. I’m always a little uncomfortable with the Zipcar pitch and I have no idea how Smartcar got on that panel (what a joke). That said, your characterization of that panel is very misleading. Folks on the panel included Robert Liberty, an elected official whose comments were borderline anti-car, then someone from Portland Streetcar, me talking about BTA stuff, a representative from the Willamette Pedestrian Coalition, an owner of Clever Cycles, a Trimet representative, a PDOT employee…and yes one person from Zipcar and one person from Smartcar.
I, for one, am glad that JM reports the news about these events. Others, it seems, have seriously distorted impressions of them.
I look forward to the Reed summit. Even though I may not agree with all the solutions brought by presenters, I’m glad that we’re having this conversation.
