No. I\’m not \”scouring\”. I just thought I might start using Page Two more. One thing I\’m thinking about is using it to post higher-profile bike stories that are going around the web.
What happens is that a lot of people start emailing me saying, \”I know this isn\’t Portland but…\”
I take you feel I shouldn\’t post this type of story? I\’m open to your feedback.

I got rear ended (in my car) in San Fran by a cabbie that fell asleep on the highway. We stopped and he told me he was finishing an extremely long shift. No damage. Felt sorry for him. At least we don\’t have cabs in Portland, right?

Perfect story, along with the one of the girl who got hit on the Hood 2 Coast, for page 2. I hadn\’t really noticed \”Page 2\” until about a week ago, but I really like the use of page 2 for stories outside of what is on the front page.
I was first alerted to this story by its having been posted on the Yahoo home page, but didn\’t learn much there since it was a vid clip. I don\’t generally watch vid clips(and haven\’t yet watched this one) since I\’m one of the people that still relies on dial-up.
Glad to see the story here, but would have been happier to find either a transcription of the vid dialogue or another written telling of the incident. Unless or until there becomes so many of them that it becomes cumbersome to do so, it seems very worthwhile to keep informed about bike-motor vehicle collisions around the world. This can help us understand the cause and effect relationship involved in them, better preparing ourselves to arrive upon ways to reduce such collisions in the future.
Don\’t listen to Robert. This is a great story and I for one, feel having a perspective on what is going on outside of our area is a big plus.
I went to a different report on the same story, with a comments section that was disturbing to say the least. Some of the people on there wanted to give the cabby a medal for hitting 11 of the cyclists and sending 6 to the hospital, but others wanted to wait until one of the cyclists died. And the homophobic rants…
The one that I found … interesting started out \”All cyclists are gay and deserve to die.\” I mean where does that level of hate come from? Honestly?
I\’m glad you posted this. I want to know about this sort of thing, and I come here for it.
I\’m particularly interested in Opus\’ comment (#8) about the comments posted in response to this story on other websites. These type of comments are typical of what you can see on Oregonlive and many, many other sites with respect to cyclists and other topics. Doesn\’t this sort of thing show that civilization really is the thin veneer some believe it to be?
Generally, I\’d say to Opus and whoever is bothered by them, don\’t sweat too much, the extreme stuff you\’re finding on some of the other weblogs.
Personally, I don\’t place a lot importance on the hysterically extreme comments that find a voice on some weblogs like those of oregonlive.com. The authors of such comments usually make their allegations and insinuations without substantiating them whatsoever by the use of fact or rational thinking. I suspect they\’re a very small minority of the public, and don\’t accurately indicate the weakening safety margin of the general publics civility.
I blame the editors of those weblogs for allowing such offending comments to be published, and suspect they do it for the same reason they indulge in some of the other lapses of journalistic integrity readers here may have observed in regards to the O\’s reporting of the recent spate of bicycle-motorist collisions and confrontations: ratings and sales of advertising and newspapers.
Weblogs can be a great way for people of widely varied views to exchange thoughts and ideas. If people in a position to do so aren\’t making the effort to oblige people commenting on those weblogs to observe basic rules of respect and civility, the outcome can be very bad.

That is so true. The internet is such an amazing tool that allows people to feel anonymous and post as much venom as they want with little to no consequences.
Read some of the comments about the Hood to Coast runner who was mowed down by the car. Some posters were blaming the runner for being run down from behind by what turned out to be an intoxicated driver.
