When the Fahrner family (Todd, Martina, and son Carl) wanted to get away for a little weekend vacation, they did what many other American families do — they packed up their vehicle and set out for the open road.
But unlike most families, the Fahrner’s packed up a pair of Xtracycle-equipped, electric-assisted bicycles for their journey.
While browsing my contacts on Flickr the other day, I came across a great set of photos of their trip. The photos were accompanied by this description:
Last night at City Hall, the City of Portland hosted a party to celebrate their achievement of becoming a Platinum-level bike-friendly city.
As attendees gathered around the steps in front of the building and filled commemorative water bottles with root beer out of a Platinum pump, short speeches were made by three leaders who have played major roles in Portland’s biking success story: City Commissioner and Mayor-elect Sam Adams, former Commissioner and now U.S. Congressman Earl Blumenauer, and former Mayor Bud Clark.
An exhibit of Oregon-made bicycles currently on display at the Portland International Airport has proven to be so ppoular with travelers that it will be extended through the busy holiday season.
The exhibit, Handmade: Bicycles Designed and Built in Oregon debuted in April and was originally planned to run through September. But Keith Lachowicz, who handles public art collections for the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC, they helped organize the show) says it will now run through the end of December.
