Oregon Public Broadcasting’s Think Out Loud radio show will discuss different ideas about the design of bike lanes, bike-related laws, and how best to share the road.

The producers of the show were spurred on in part by a recent article in Adventure Cyclist magazine that blamed the design of Portland’s bike lanes in two fatal crashes last fall (they planned the show before that article was published).

According to a promo blurb on their website, the show seeks to answer the question,

“should bicycles be treated the same as cars when it comes to where they travel in traffic? Are bike lanes helpful or harmful when it comes to safety for cyclists and drivers alike? What is the best way to share the road?”

Producers of the show tell me they’ll use comments posted at this post on their blog for fodder in the discussion.

OPB is Oregon’s National Public Radio affiliate station. The show is scheduled to be broadcast tomorrow (5/6) at 9:00am.

This is a timely program, I wrote OPB a note last week that they should be promoting cycling, while doing the traffic report, they should cover bike lanes too. "There's currently no traffic backups on the SE Clinton Bike Blvd." or "there's a clear path while crossing the Hawthorne Bridge". They liked the idea and were going to psss it along.

I have noticed that OPB's traffic reports have been sponsored by river city bikes recently.
It's pretty great to hear about all the places that traffic is stopped, then "this traffic report brought to you by river city bicycles." I wonder how many listeners notice.

I can't say, but Keven's helmet would sure be helpful for her safety!
