After a tumultuous design revision process, the Oregon Department of Motor Vehicles says they’re ready to start re-issuing the Share the Road license plate.
The plate was approved by the Legislature in the 2008 session and was supposed to be made available on January 1st, 2008. However, due to a misunderstanding between the plate’s designer and the DMV, the plate was put on hold while design issues were dealt with.
The plate was eventually redesigned in a way that all parties could agree on, and now the DMV says they’re back in business.
According to Debi Mercer, Legislative and Progams Analyst with the DMV, they ordered the new plates last Friday and have already started contacting the 174 existing plate owners. “We’re asking folks to send us at least one of the plates back,” she said from her office in Salem this morning, “they can keep one as a souvenir if they’d like.”
Mercer added that the DMV has included a postage-paid envelope with the letter and they will re-issue plates (with the same letters) as they are returned (people have 45 days to send it back).
The new plates will start being sent out on April 8th and Mercer says they’ll fill the nearly 300 existing backorders immediately with hopes to be all caught up by May.

Can I put my old plate left over, on eBay, to try and earn some money, to pay for the gas it\’s going to take for the car? (Wonder how much it might fetch …) Gas was over 4.20 a gallon in SW OR at the coast.
I\’ll keep my old plate as a souvenir and simply ride my bike as much as possible.
I just got the mail renewal form for my van plates, but unfortunately the options were limited to only three (Crater Lake, Salmon, Cultural) of what\’s listed on the DMV\’s web site. Alas, I\’ll have to take time off work and march in there with paperwork. If the DMV made it easier, such as an option on the renewal form, we could raise more awareness and funds for the BTA. I suspect there are folks out there who don\’t bike much but still consider themselves cyclists and would support the movement.

When I go to the DMV site to download an application for non-profit plates, I get a corrupted PDF file that can\’t open.
Dang, I really like the ones I got. The difference is so minor, I\’m surprised. But then again, I guess it\’s significant enough for me to want to keep my original one..?
We received our \’mail back\’ envelope today. Included were paper temp plate for window and an envelope to mail the single plate back.

I do not think it incourages driving. One will already be driving if they are ordering the plates. Maybe those of us who bike when we can, and drive when we need to carry much stuff will look at our own plates and be reminded, \”Maybe I should leave the car behind today and bicycle\”. I will order my plates soon.
The plates will also remind me to share the road if I am driving AND to share the road if I am cycling. I will NOT be one who comes accross the Broadway Bridge the wrong way at 20mph and almost be the unlawfull cause of a wreck, as I have seen three times in two months.

So you\’re saying that people will see the plate and then decide to purchase a car, register it with the state, and begin driving all for the purpose of obtaining the plate?? What\’s next? – this whole plate idea will lead to more accidents?
Hmmm . . . seems rather unlikely to me, but maybe there is another definition of encourage that I do not know of.
It\’s about time, I\’m tired of looking at our temporary permit taped in the back window. We went in the 2nd week of January to apply, and have been waiting ever since. We even had to go in and renew our temporary! The folks at the DMV had no idea what was going on, but hopefully they will arrive soon.
Blood money? …I have concerns with the BTA, but I do appreciate the effort on this campaign. When is the BTA going to tackle the issue that the exam (for a license) has zero questions relating to Bikes or Peds (the exam, I took several months ago had nothing. Seems like a logical next step…
Saw the new plate on a car for the first time tonight at the Beaverton Town Square Fred Meyer parking lot.
sweet, they sent me a temporary tag when I ordered mine… now my old rattle trap will look approx. 5% less shabby!
One small step for man and mankind…but these plates are not available for \”RV\’s which include VW Eurovans. Why limit the market>?
