Weekend open thread: Share your bike fun

Lots of great rides are happening this weekend. Warmish, clear days are expected so there’s really no good excuse for not getting out there.

On Saturday, the Oregon Randonneurs are doing their annual Verboort Sausage Populaire. The route looks phenomenal. I can’t wait to read all about it from Cecil, Lynne and the gang.

And I hope some of your are going on Exchange Cycle Tours 2-day Austin Hot Springs Campout.

Then on Sunday, it’s time for cyclocross racing. Stop #5 on the Cross Crusade takes us to Barton Park. CrankMyChain Cycle TV will be webcasting live and it should be a perfect day for racing.

What are you planning to do?

No matter where you decide to ride, chime in with a comment and share your pedaling pleasure!

Should we assume that means you won\’t be joining us?

Helping to host the last \”Meet the Team\” ride through OBRA. If you\’ve been considering joining a racing team, this is a great opportunity! Should be good weather (albeit cold). Leaving from Kettleman\’s Bagel Shop at Saturday, 9am, SE 11th and Sherman. Easy, two hour ride for those wanting to race competitively and need a team. Come interview us!!

then Cross Crusade in Barton!!

\”Should we assume that means you won\’t be joining us?\”

Wish I was Cecil..it\’s going to be a great day out there too.

I\’ll be doing the polar opposite discipline on Sunday…45 minutes going as fast as I possibly can.

I will do some rando events. Not if, just when.

In light of a front page article in Saturday\’s Oregonian here is the text of my letter to the editor:
So, we have a sex offender registry. Why don\’t we have a registry for drivers who drive with suspended licenses, or no insurance, and have the police check in on them periodically to ensure that they are not driving.\”

The article is about the sentencing of the two women involved in the hit and run fatality situation last May on SE Foster Road.

Looks like another sunny and dry cross race on Sunday….sigh…I miss mud.

Not put put a damper on the weekend but that sucks about the two women who are getting extremely light sentences for hitting and killing a cyclist. They were driving with out a license or insurance, and then lied to the police about the accident. But I guess since it was only a cyclist they killed that it doesn\’t really matter.

How about a real punishment for these two. Yes the cyclist was riding the wrong way, but these to women knowingly broke the law. They knew they weren\’t supposed to be driving and yet they did and killed someone. Why doesn\’t the DA make them work with a physical therapist to help people who have been injured with rehab so they understand what they did. Or maybe work in the coroner\’s office so they can see what happens when a car hits someone.

I bought a new bicycle. I have not bought a brand new bicycle in 20 years. The bike is a gift for my son who is turning 16. (A twist on the old suburban dream of a car on your 16th birthday.)

It was fun to go to lots of shops and ride lots of different bikes. My son wanted transportation, so it was easy to walk past all the mountain road & cross bikes.

It was a close call but the KHS Green edged out the 3-spd version of the Bianchi Milano. The difference was a more complete set package at a lower spec.

I finished riding all the roads in Tualatin today. Tualatin was part of my quest to ride the full length of every road in all the Portland area cities. Magnificent day for riding!

Today we went out to scout the various locations we have lined up for Cycle Seen. Cycle Seen is a photography show scheduled for June of 2008 celebrating the local Portland cycling culture. Rachel, Ashley, Dominica, and I met at the Tea Zone in the Pearl to start our ride. From there we headed up north to the Little Red Bike Cafe, Cup & Saucer, and the Guardino Gallery. From there we headed back south to New Seasons. All of these great locations will be hosting Cycle Seen June 2008. Pictures from the ride can be found at the following link.

2 great days of riding. Randonneur ride fantastic. Ran into a couple other groups who stopped to enjoy the day. Today 200k. Started out foggy but the sun came out. Route not great but Lynn made it fun. We did miss our other riding buddy.

Rode the Verboort Populaire yesterday and ate much sausage, both there and then later at home 🙂

Rode the Three Prairies 200km Permanent with Rickey today. Breathtaking fog most of the morning, sunny afternoon. We finished just before 6pm (yes, in the dark. Lights, reflectors, all good)

ride reports and pictures

Missed the person who talked us into this. I\’m sure she missed being there today, too.

6 of us rode on the ECT ride to Austin Hot Springs and back (about 60 miles up the Clackamas River), camping overnight. It dropped down to freezing up there at the 1600\’ level, but since we were close to and downwind from the hot springs, it never quite got down to 32 at our tents. Total mileage was about 135 miles over the two days, and we got some spectacular views of the Upper Clackamas River, old-growth trees, and the Clackamas Gorge. Pictures forthcoming!

Exchange Cycle Tours took a ride out to Austin hot springs. The springs were pretty amazing, but the scenery was mindblowing. There are some great pictures here.
