With the hope of enticing first-timers into the local racing scene, the folks behind the Monday Night Bike Race Series are hosting another “Ladies’ Night” this Monday (8/27).
Both coaches and experienced racers will be on hand to mentor, answer questions, and provide tips. All that is required is a road bike, helmet and some curiosity to see how big groups of spandex-clad cyclists manage to ride in a pack.
And if that isn’t enough to tempt one out of their daily commute, the event will also host a raffle and hand out various prizes. For those who have only ever experienced racing via watching the Tour de France, “Ladies’ Night” provides a fun and relaxed environment to meet other women cyclists of all ages and take on new challenges.
The novice race is mentored by experienced racers who help riders to form pace lines, launch attacks as well as practicing other aspects of racing.
The course at Portland International Raceway (PIR) is a 1.9 mile loop with wide, sweeping corners and plenty of space across the roadway; an ideal introductory course. For those with family, friends or their own fan clubs there are bleachers along the finishing stretch.
The cost is $13 for women and masters men ($5 for women under eighteen), with a $1 discount for those who ride, carpool to take the MAX. Monday Night PIR will then donate the dollar to the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA).

6:20pm Novice Women (any age, *OBRA Category 4)
6:35pm Open Women (Category 1/2/3)
6:43pm Masters Men 30+ (Category 1/2/3)
6:45pm Masters Men 30+ (Category 4/5)
*novice racers will be automatically assigned to OBRA category 5 (men) or 4 (women) at registration
