Multnomah County has just released their third Sellwood Bridge survey (for background on the project, see this post).
Here’s the word from their Public Affairs office:
“An online survey offered through September 9 (at SellwoodBridge.org) lets the public choose up to two preferred alternatives for replacing or rehabilitating the 81-year-old structure. Survey results will be considered by a community task force and committee of elected officials that will choose up to four alternatives for further study this fall.
…The current online survey will gather public input before the next project milestone, when up to four alternatives will advance for further study in the draft Environmental Impact Statement.”
Selection of a preferred alternative is scheduled for spring of 2008.
Survey participants are encouraged to learn more about alternatives before taking the survey by exploring the Build a Bridge feature on the project’s website.

Seems that out of all the options available, all will impact one vital group in the survey- traffis, peds., bikes and/or living space. The question then remains who to say \”screw you\” to. Traffic always wins out, it\’s the others that will have to stand up and be counted.
Somebody has to stand up for common sense here. A Cable Stayed Bridge would cost half of the price of what the inept county is proposing, plus they weather earthquakes better. Yet nobody here will even consider it because it\’s less profitable and costs the taxpayers less. Wake up and smell the coffee already.

Nearest ones that I know about:
Tri Cities & Tacoma over the Thea Foss Waterway. The Tacoma one is four lanes wide and cost about 30 mil I believe (unless my memory is off). With the price increases for steel, and two lanes plus 10\’ sidewalks 30-40 mil should be in the range.
