Seattle writer Mike McCann will read his contribution from, “Cycling’s Greatest Misadventures” at Powell’s Books on Hawthorne (3723 SE Hawthorne) tonight at 7:30.
The book was just released by Casagrande Press and was edited by Erich Schweikher, a local cyclist and professor of composition at Portland Community College.
Schweikher spent a year collecting hundreds of submissions and ended up with 27 true stories with themes that include, “glorious crashes, raceday hijinks, devastating miscalculations, and unexpected animal attacks”.
The “misadventures” range from the tale of a computer programmer who crashes a stationary bike during his first spin class, to the story of twenty African-American soldiers who completed the first group ride across America in 1897 while riding wooden-rimmed, iron bikes and carrying rifles.
According to Schweikher,
“I wanted a collection that would be representative of the cycling experience. While these stories show the times when it all goes wrong, they also embody the adventurous spirit of cycling.”
