The word on the street is that citizen activist, blogger and consummate Portland transportation insider Chris Smith is considering a run for Portland City Council.

Smith was recently profiled in the Portland Tribune in a front page story that called him, “Citizen Smith”.

A former transportation chair for the Northwest District Association, Smith is also Mr. Streetcar. He sits on both the Citizens Advisory Committee and the board of Portland Streetcar Inc.

Is he bike-friendly? Definitely.

In 2006 he was nominated for an Alice B. Toeclips Award by the BTA and he volunteered to catalog, host, and create a website for the KBOO Bike Show.

Add this to the rumor that Commissioner Sam Adams might run for Mayor in ’08 and things could be looking up for cyclists in City Hall.

Oh, wow, I think Chris Smith getting elected might be the thing that finally convinces Jack Bogdanski to move out of Portland. Go, Chris, go!

Just in case anyone is wondering, that’s an aluminum-frame Biria (German) commuter bike I’m sporting 🙂

It’s my around-town bike.

I recently heard Chris on the City Club of Portland forum speaking in favor of keeping our current form of gov’t. He’s well spoken, VERY well informed and friendly.

Oh, he’s also the mastermind behind the podcasting of the KBOO Bike Show on the PortlandTransport.coom website. Chris does a lot to bring the transportation conversation into accessible realms.

From what I know of Chris so far, I think he’d make a fine addition to our city council.

I have worked closely with Chris on Street Car and Transportation issues, he’s great. Chris was on the Amsterdam trip too and is very interested in solving problems that seem small to some but are larger for us, for example bicycles around street car.

Chris, sign me up for volunteering
