City gears up for Bike to Work Day

Hot off the presses, here’s the City of Portland’s official Bike to Work Day flyer…

The City will have “free continental breakfast served to all who ride, and free fun for everyone who shows up.” Flyer: Courtesy Dat Nguyen

Remember all the fun we had last year? Well the City of Portland plans to do it all again. They’re gearing up for the big Bike to Work Day bash in Pioneer Courthouse Square. Don’t forget to roll by on your way to work on the morning of May 16th.

Bike to Work Day

too much coffee last year.

Bike to Work Day in Pioneer Courthouse Square is a long-standing Portland tradition. Last year I shared some vintage posters, photos and a historical retrospective of the event.

On the other side of the river, the Lloyd District Transportation Management Association (Lloyd TMA for short) will hold their annual Bike Commute Day on May 18th, from 7:30-9am in Oregon Square (Holladay St. between 7th & 9th Ave.) In addition to free breakfast and informational booths, speakers will include Transportation Commissioner Sam Adams and yours truly ;-).

If you know of other Bike to Work Day or Bike Month events, get in touch, or share them in the comments.

There is rumor the BTA is organizing a Ride of Silence on the evening of the 16th. I’m sure more details will follow.

Thanks for posting this. I don’t normally go through downtown on my way to work, but will have to on that day. I was going to bus it, but now I’m definitely riding!

Great poster, but where’s his helmet?

I find it highly ironic and perhaps even oddly insulting that “The City” is still putting on this bike party when the Mayor has just denied funding for an update to the Bicycle Master Plan. Throwing a bike-to-work party for the suits downtown while thousands of working poor ride bikes to their minimum-wage jobs in mid-county seems a tad disingenuous to me.

A fully-funded, updated Bicycle Master Plan would hopefully expand bicycle awareness — and opportunities! — for working people throughout the Portland area to get to and from work safely by bike. Throwing a party downtown where so many would miss out on it feels less like a real act of change and more like a photo op to me.

I won’t be there.

Fawn- No helment on the rider because he’s from Amsterdam. The photo is from this wonderful site: http://www.ski-epic.com/amsterdam_bicycles/index.html

Thanks BrandonS–very cool site indeed.

I have to say though, that I think the city of Portland should be promoting helmet use. (I will write this to them as well.)

Unfortunately, we don’t live in Amsterdam and while Portland may be a bike friendly city, it is still a risky endeavor to commute by bike at times. My partner has been hit twice by cars (and he is pretty conservative in his cycling.) His helmet saved his brain from being smashed one of those times, so I am very partial to them!

Jeez, aren’t there any earlybird commuters? I’ll have finished my 14 mile commute and have worked for a solid half hour before the festivities even start. Oh well. 🙂

Don\’t forget the events focused on commuting families this month!

\”Getting Started in Family Bike Commuting\”

The BTA\’s Family Biking Commute Workshops discuss the common challenges that families face when considering bike commuting. Topics such as rain, helmet fitting, safety and time management will be covered. Bring your questions about bike commuting. Participants will receive free bike maps and a list of community resources.
