Despite rain, bikes and Sprockettes shine at Earth Day

Need a helmet, need a brain?
Now you can have both.

Saturday was the big Earth Day Celebration at Woodlawn Park. Unfortunately it was also one of the coldest and wettest day we’ve had in a while.

But despite the dreary weather, scores of Portlanders showed up by bike. Among the many bikes in the parking corral, I saw several families with trailers (and one on a Bike Friday tandem). They were treated to a gutsy performance by the Sprockettes (more photos below), bike-powered smoothies, affordable helmets (include the “brain bucket”), and a host of fun bikes to demo in the Transportation Village.

cycling meets golf.”

The demo area featured lots of interesting bikes including; EcoSpeed equipped recumbents, hand-cycles, a beautiful Jorg & Olif dutch city bike, and of course a few bakfiets. The most interesting bike at the event was the Turf Trike (in photo). Described by its manufacturer as, “The world’s first cycle powered golf cart,” it was a blast to tool around on. It rode really smooth, had huge tires, and the front-end attachment offers a lot of utilitarian possibilities.

Another fun bike at the event was Gabe Amadeus’s “Bad America” tallbike. I took it for a spin and did some off-roading. Everything was great until I forgot how tall it was and fell over when I tried to stop. Lame.

Gabe has much more style on it than I do:

Still wet and bruised from my tallbike tumble, I knew the Sprockettes performance would make everything better. And I was right.

Despite persistent rain and slippery conditions, the ladies in pink showed their true colors and performed valiantly in front of an appreciative crowd.

Those brain buckets look like Nutcases. Any chance we’ll see them in stores anytime soon?

I helped Jeff sell the helmets on Saturday.

Brain buckets can be found here:
https://helmetsrus.net/retail/product_info.php?cPath=28&products_id=78&osCsid=7b10f3f5f965ebdd6fe1bbe704a4403d

If you didn’t get yours for $10, you’ll have to pay the regular $14.95

“Described by it’s manufacturer as…”

A minor quibble, but a major source of irritation for those of us who respect the written word: “it’s” should be used ONLY as a contraction for “it is.”

Reading “it’s” when “its” is meant is like riding over roofing nails.

glad you caught that. I’ve made the correction.

Thanks.

No offense intended, as this is my favorite blog ever.

This is not my normal nickname, but I must protect my identity when I point out spelling or grammar errors, as I know that, online, such talk is met with derision and scorn.

Again the Sprockets show they are such the troopers – performing in the rain for their fans!

It reminds me when I saw them 2 years ago doing an imitation of ‘pigpen’ in the summer’s dust at the Clown House. True professionals.

That cycling golf cart is off the hook. It’s a perfect compromise as walking is too slow and gas/electric carts are cheating.

No surprise the person worried about grammar also prefers the British spelling of the word “pedaling” (two l’s). 🙂

Are the Brain Buckets sold locally anywhere? I really want one to show off my big-ass brain!
