Help make Milwaukie bicycle-friendly

Last October, the cities of Portland and Milwaukie came together to dedicate the Three Bridges on the Springwater and Milwaukie Mayor James Bernard quipped, “we’re proud to have Portland as our suburb.”

Portland Bike Summit

If you ride in Milwaukie, this could be you!

Now, if you live and ride in Milwaukie, you have a chance to come together and make it more bicycle and pedestrian friendly.

Milwaukie is in the midst of their Transportation System Plan update and there are two major opportunities for bicycle-specific, public input.

“Over the past ten years, projects have been implemented, the community has grown, and transportation needs have changed. The City will use your input to update the Plan and set new priorities based on growth projections to the year 2035.”

The first is an online survey. Their website says the deadline for it has passed, but it’s still accessible and I’m sure they will appreciate the input.

The other opportunity for feedback are two public workshops focused on pedestrian and bicycle issues. The first one is tomorrow (3/24) from 10:00am to noon at Milwaukie City Hall (2nd Floor, 10722 SE Main Street).

The goals of these workshops are to:

  • Share personal experience with pedestrian and bicycle routes in Milwaukie.
  • Clearly identify problems with the existing pedestrian and bicycle networks and note the things that work well.
  • Brainstorm solutions for the problems identified.

For more information contact Brett Kelver, the bicycle liaison for the Transportation System Plan at (503) 786-7657 or kelverb[at]ci[dot]milwaukie[dot]or[dot]us.

Any Milwaukieans out there? Let us know how things are going in your city.

“Milwaukie is in the midst of updating their Transportation System Plan and there are two major opportunities for public input.”

There are 2 major opportunities for BICYCLE-specific input. There are, in fact, at least 6 different working groups for the TSP update, each meeting 2-4 times over the next 8 weeks. All together, that’s nearly 20 opportunities for public input on at least one facet of the TSP.

I spent most of last Saturday riding around taking photographs of existing roadways in Milwaukie in preparation for tomorrow’s meeting. One of the major items they’re looking for input on is the best locations for North-South and East-West routes through Milwaukie so city residents can get to various destinations inside and outside the city. If anyone routinely rides through Milwaukie (not just on the Springwater Trail), please come to the meeting tomorrow at Milwaukie City Hall. If you can’t make it and want to provide input at that meeting, you can email me at “matt.picio” “at” “gmail.com” and I’ll be happy to present it tomorrow morning.

Also, the website for the TSP Update (not the survey, but the overall project webpage) is here:
