Local media busy with bike news

The local media has been busy covering bike-related stories in the past week. This morning’s Oregonian had three stories that should be familiar to BikePortland readers.

Here are those stories, along with a few others you might have missed.

Today

Yesterday (3/28/07)

  • Willamette Week: Wheels of Justice
Freelancer Julie Sabatier takes on drinking and biking. She has a quote from Gabriel Amadeus, myself, and a couple good comments.

Last Week (3/22/07)

I’ve tagged over 131 local media stories about bikes with a bookmarking tool called del.icio.us. You’ll notice them in my sidebar and you can browse all the stories here.

Check out “Judy”‘s on-line comment re: the WWeek article – she’s got the weirdest complaint about cyclists that I’ve seen to date 🙂

Interesting. “Judy” states that there are some folks that cruise around parking lots on bikes looking for a car to steal. I had no idea. I wonder what these folks do with the bike after the steal the car?

Maybe they only steal cars with bike racks.

Judy probably also doesn’t like the way the sun flies around in the sky and tries to give her skin cancer.

Funny. I was pondering the very topic of pedaling under the influence just this morning as I spun my Trek 2100 around the MAC Club parking deck looking for a Lexus without Lojack on it. Why sweat when you can cruise in leather appointed style, am I right? The new ones can parallel park themselves!

Willamette Week – what a treasure! It is exciting to see our little bike community is getting some ink in that publication. You’ll know we have arrived when the cover story, “Two Wheeled Terror” hits newsstands detailing how car theft, global warming, poor test scores at Portland Public Schools and a shortage of quality carbon fiber can all be pinned on cyclists.

On the brightside, Byron Beck will devote his entire column to how we miscreants are still “homolicious” thanks to toned glutes and tight lycra shorts.

I’d just like to point out that you’ve managed to scoop the “real” news on almost every cycling related story that’s come up lately. Good job.

Also, I am happy that local triathletes are jumping on the bandwagon against holding a major race in the river.
Though Jeff still claims that holding it will draw more atttention to the plight of the river, the real issue is this:

“NOT” being able to hold a triathalon due to the grossness is the real thing that will bring more attenmtion to the plight of the river, and maybe cause some pushing with the powers that be to clean up the problems, making the river a viable option for possibly great events such as this…
And on the note of the Superfund site being downstream,

Anyone who takes a moment to notice will see that he river flows downstream, and also up… way up actually, carrying these problems upriver into downtown long before they go out to sea, where everyone but the marine mammals gets to imagine they are long gone…

This is a writer/reporter for WW??

This woman, who can’t form a sentence without punctuation, grammatical and spelling errors?

This woman, who feels that a logical argument for licensing bicyclists is because she perceives them to be trolling around parking lots trying to steal cars?

Did she even go to college?

No one wonder that paper sucks.

Noelle, Judy was not the reporter. She was just some on-line reader who felt the need to comment. We all then felt the need to comment about her comments. The reporter, while potentially liable for other crimes against language, is not to blame for Judy’s blatherings.

I hope that Judy doesn’t see this – she’ll add it to the list of evils for which all cyclists are clearly responsible . . .

“SALEM – An armed robber who fled on a bicycle was arrested Thursday afternoon thanks to the help of a witness who chased him, police said. Officers arriving at True Value Hardware were told that a witness went after the suspect, who had stolen and loaded a Rototiller on a bicycle trailer and was pulling it away.”

Now not only will we all be branded as potential car thieves, everyone will think that we use our trailers for shoplifting . . .

Hard to imagine making a quick getaway on your bicycle whilst hauling a rototiller in a trailer.

On the other hand, I’d think that the population in general would want all thieves to ride bicycles, so that they’ve be easy to catch when they decide they need a new rototiller, or something. Think how slow he would have been had he loaded up a new Lexus!
