Bicycle Safety Education (BSE) Program Instructor, Portland-Metro Region

Description

The Bicycle Safety Program Instructor will work with the Bicycle Transportation Alliance (BTA) to instruct an after-school bicycle safety program called Pedal Power. Pedal Power is a six-session program run at elementary schools in Portland. Job training will also be provided for our 10-hour, in-school bicycle safety curriculum. Both programs teach youths ages 9-12 to be safe and predictable bicyclists, and promote bicycling as recreation and transportation. The in-school Bicycle Safety Education program is comprehensive, begins in a classroom setting and then works with children outside on bikes (equipment provided by the BTA). Both programs focus on getting kids to ride safely on the street.

Job Duties

* Teach the program to groups of 8-15 students (Pedal Power) or 25-35 students (BSE), ages 9-12.
* Work with volunteers to assist with the program.
* Assist with program logistics including transportation, maintenance and storage of equipment.
* Document and compile work experiences.

Qualifications

A highly qualified Bicycle Safety Instructor will:

* Be an experienced to an avid cyclist.
* Have experience and enjoy working with preadolescent youth.
* Have experience running education programs.
* Be active, enthusiastic and responsible so to safely and effectively run a program from start to finish.

Time Requirements

Dates: The BTA is seeking to hire a Program Coordinator to attend an instructors’ training from March 9th through March 11th. Steady spring work will begin the first week of April. Applications will be accepted through February 23rd.

BTA is looking to hire someone who will also be available to teach from September through October, to coincide with the autumn teaching season.

Hours: This position is seasonal, averaging about 20 hours per week in the spring and fall teaching seasons. The position requires the ability to work after school from Monday through Friday. The Bicycle Safety Instructor will be fairly inactive in the summer and winter months.
Compensation

$14/hr. (Seasonal employee without benefits)
