Checking in on my visitor stats

It’s been almost a year since I last shared information about my visitor statistics. Given everything that has happened on this site, one year ago seems like ancient history so I figured it was time to reflect on how traffic to this site has grown.

[Monthly visits to BikePortland.org]

Since the beginning of this year, my traffic has increased dramatically from around 25,000 visits in January to about 95,000 visits in August. From June to August alone, the amount of visits nearly doubled!

Besides visits, I also like to look at how many pages are viewed. Since January 2006, there have been about 1.32 millions pages viewed on BikePortland.org. These days the site averages about 7-10,000 pageviews every day.

Traffic stats are fun, but they only tell part of the story. In the world of blogs, one way to assess the credibility and authority of a site is by how many other blogs link to it. A site called Technorati is one of the most trusted sources for ranking blogs. They track over 55 millions blogs from all over the world. BikePortland.org is currently ranked 8,749th which makes this the #1 bike blog in the Technorati blog directory!

So what does all this mean to you? Nothing really. It’s just fun for me to see how this site has grown in the last year. I am also very grateful for all of your insights, feedback, comments and tips. If it wasn’t for my esteemed readers this site would not be what it is today.

I know you’re all busy and there are tons of great resources on the web, so thanks for making BikePortland.org part of your reading habits. If you ever have feedback (good or bad!) or advice please get in touch by using my contact form.

Thanks and keep in touch.

That is good news. Obviously your blog is popular even beyond Portland. I like to check in on it from time to time even though I am a couple thousand miles from there.

Wowee, Jonathan, you earned a free pass to heaven. Who knew having a bicycling blog would get you past St. Peter.

Congrats! And thank you for a great first year.

Can you also track how long each visitor stays on your site/visit?

Thanks everyone.

Cate,
the average visit time is around 4 minutes…which is great because I’ve read that the usual blog average is just 90 seconds..

I came to know about Jonathan and his site when I was out doing my Portland-based bike commuting story for CBN News. I’ve been absolutely addicted to the site ever since. It’s like having a sweet chunk of my old hometown right here on my computer screen every evening. As a journalist I visit tons of sites all the time. This is definitely one of the most interesting, most fun and most well-organized. And I love all you wild, crazy, cranky regulars who write in and blast away at each other (and cars, traffic, The Man, etc) all the time. Actually, you’re the most Oregonian thing about the site.
