Preliminary Share the Road mural design unveiled

As I reported back in March, a group of community activists and artists are working on a new “Share the Road” mural that will soon adorn the side of Hawthorne Auto Clinic (4307 SE Hawthorne) in Southeast Portland.

Below is the preliminary sketch just sent to me by one of the artists, Sara Stout. This is the design she will submit to the Regional Arts and Culture Council (RACC) tomorrow, and the final draft is due on June 20th. According to mural organizers, if the design is approved by the RACC, they will start painting in early July.

Some unicyclists are so good, they don’t need to wear helmet–even while riding in traffic.

Hmm… wonder if next we’ll see a unicycle pulling a trailer, or with panniers?

Where do you mount the front light on one of those things?

Can you equip ’em with a kickstand?

Hey, on last year’s STP, I saw a unicyclist with aero bars. I’m still trying to figure that one out. . .

I am still open to suggestions about how to improve the mural design, but this is the picture we are submitting to RACC today with our permit application. I like the idea of including rollerbladers and I will try to find a place for a blader or two before the final sketch is due on June 20th. Other ideas welcome too.

Our project was never a contest. This is the only design being submitted for the Hawthorne Auto Clinic “Share the Road” mural, but I encourage EVERYONE and ANYONE to design and paint murals. There are plenty of empty walls in this town that could be peppered with images of bikers and bladers!

The first step is to find a building-owner who would like their wall painted. Then all you have to do is recruit a mural-painting team, design the mural and then be ready to jump through one million hoops for a public-art permit from RACC. Sometimes RACC may even offer you funding for your project.
