Huge crowds at Worst Day Ride

Worse Day of the Year Ride

With well over 1000 riders, yesterday's Worst Day of the Year Ride kicked of the season in grand style. I've never seen such a diverse group of cyclists on one ride. People from all walks of bike showed up, eager to pedal around town in the company of friends and long overdue sunshine.

Eleni and I met all sorts of friendly folks, including:

And I'd like to introduce you to Kate Kahl and Emily Baker. These seventh graders from Portland Waldorf School tackled the ride on unicycles. But this was just a warm-up...their goal is to unicycle across Oregon! Good luck Kate and Emily and keep me posted on your progress.

We had a great ride and I can't think of a better way to start the '06 bike season. Unfortunately we didn't make it down to the Lucky Lab for the after party. I heard it was a mob scene. Anyone care to share how the party went?

I just noticed there's already a good discussion about this ride going on in the forums.

Ironic, in a totally pleasant way, that yesterday was the NICEST day yet this year for a bike ride. I took my son and his buddy to Laurelhurst Park on our bikes! Glad you all had fun!

    Hey Jonathan,

Thanks for the great coverage of the ride. I'll be poting photo booth photos on my blog later in the week. I agree that this ride quite possibly has the most diverse group of bikers in one place at one time... kind of like BikePortland! Here's to more bike fun across all bike stripes!

  • [...] I just heard from bike community mastermind and uber event promoter Ayleen Crotty that the final tally for Sunday’s Worst Day of the Year Ride was a whopping 1,525 people. That’s an amazing turnout and over twice the amount of riders they had last year. [...]

  • [...] Matt, his family, and 1,500 other idiots paid $20 each to participate in something called the “Worst Day of the Year Ride“. I’m all for bike riding– therapeutic, cheaper and cleaner than a car, plus the whole being able to do wheelies thing– but come on! You can ride your bike for free! The money better be going to a damn good cause. >:[ [...]
