Cycle Truck makes hauling easier

fall colors

Noticed this flyer the other day at Citybikes. It’s a cool little invention called the Cycle Truck. Some local guy (I’ve emailed and haven’t heard back) is taking old cruisers and mountain bikes and outfitting them with a custom front rack set-up.

Basically, he mounts the basket to the downtube – not your handlebars – thus allowing your bars (and wheel) to move independently of the rack. He also swaps the front wheel for a smaller one. Both of these things allow you to more easily carry heavier loads. It’s really a cool idea.

Check out how Tom (Shift webmaster) used his at the recent bike move.

Just another bit of local cycling ingenuity!

The person who makes these is Geoff a former Community Cycling Center mechanic. He’s very clever and a damned savvy bike mechanic.
I’m glad to see he’s having some success at this entrepeneurial work.

Nice to see that someone’s reviving the old “Cycle Truck” idea. Schwinn used to prduce bikes like this up until the 1960’s: 20-inch front wheel, 26-inch rear wheel, frame-mounted forward cargo platform, *very* heavy-duty construction. I think there’s a couple hanging from the rafters at City Liquidators.

My brother made a rad bike truck too. Because the heavy-duty front rack is braced by a diagonal cross-bar that he added, it kind of looks like a mixte frame. Hence the name: the Truxte. Photos here. I’ve ridden on the front rack, and it is mega-sweet.
