Pedal powered dragsters

Posted by Jonathan Maus (Editor) on October 21st, 2005 at 1:40 pm

Check out this article from Autoweek (of all places) about the Red Bull Dragsterday. I would love to see this event come to Portland. I know our local mutant bike cult would despise a corporate sponsored event, but Red Bull puts on a great show (remember the Flugtag?) Pedal-powered dragsters would be like the Mt. Tabor soap box races with a fun twist (having to actually pedal!). Check out the picture below. Looks like fun!

Geez, I gotta do a better job of promotion.

We at the OHPV put on the Human Power Challenge every Memorial Day weekend at PIR. We have all sorts of odd vehicles in all sorts of races, including 1/8 mile drag racing. There's photos of some of the long races and the autocross at http://photostore.chrisleck.com/gallery/560421
Here's some of the tire smokin' action from the drag races:

    Jeff,

I'm sure you do a fine job of promotion. I should have known about OHPV. Looks like you guys have a great thing going. I loved the photos and I'll put the HPC on my calendar for next year. Keep me posted on any upcoming events.

I've been to one of these--they're lots of fun! The rigid-fairing-covered recumbents go SO FAST! And there are all kinds of bike-like contraptions everywhere to marvel at.
