Hit and run: Look for an Audi missing side mirror
Posted by Jonathan Maus (Editor) on October 16th, 2005 at 10:48 pm
At midnight on Saturday the 15th at Killingsworth and 18th, local cyclist Drew Kenny was hit by a car (photos here). He spent the night in the hospital but he’s pretty banged up. The car that hit him didn’t even stop.
I’m posting this so you can all be on the lookout for the car. It’s a red Audi and it’s missing a side mirror. If anyone has information on the whereabouts of this car, please contact me. Thanks.

what time did this happen in the evening?

I have only seen it in the morning (about 6:30 am) as they are loading up for deliveries. It's not every morning, maybe once or twice a week. That stretch of Marine Drive (between the I-5 Northbound ramp and Ross Island) is one of the places I switch into "hyper-aware' mode as the exit for the Marriott is right there. Most of the drivers are trying to turn east and aren't watching for oncoming bikes from the west.

So this happened around midnight? Well, a hit-and-run is awful, but it appears in the photos that the bike is unequipped with lights. Perhaps this contributed to the accident? Not excusing the driver who should never have hit you in the first place, and then drove off, but lights and light clothing are certainly helpful in getting seen.

James, take a closer look, there is a light on the front of Drew's bike. I ride with him, he uses lights.

im matter of fact i bought a brand new light that day and it was never recovered from the accident but james thanks for looking out im not a stupid bike rider i ride all the time and right now is not a good time to talk about biking its been almost a week off the bike and i am freaking out i have front and rear lights all the time when it gets dark i love my self to much to not ride with out thanks to every one

Not having lights does not excuse a car driver from hitting a cyclist. Pedestrians are not required to have lights and generally do not have any shiny alloy parts for headlights to reflect off. It is not the cyclist's responsibility to be seen beyond the requirements of the law: a headlight and a rear reflector.
Drew I hope you are recovering nicely. Same about your bike. I hope the motherf*cker gets caught.
