Bikes continue to be hot media topic

There’s been a ton of local media coverage for bikes this year. This past Friday three more pieces of coverage hit the newsstands.
First, “Angry drivers call ‘bike safety’ an oxymoron” by Jennifer Anderson of the Portland Tribune (she also recently reported on the Gareth Parker Memorial Ride). She reports that some “angry drivers” are sick and tired of “scofflaw cyclists” riding around acting like they own the road. Some of them might even (gasp!) stop driving in Portland because of cyclists that “refuse to be polite.” Hey, I don’t like jerk cyclists either, but give me a break. Cyclists are not “taking over”…at least not yet. And if they were, the roads would actually be a lot safer for everyone. I really think drivers with this attitude should get on a bike and see for themselves what it’s like out there.
In other news, The Oregonian covered the new sharrow lane markings in NW, and Jonathan Nicholas mentioned yours truly in his column (scroll down)!

wow! I've generally not been a "scofflaw cyclist" on the road recently. However, if being un-polite to motorists might actually get them out their lazy dirty cars then I just might have to change my attitude here. cheers to the tribune for disseminating such useful propaganda.
